I tried to update repositories and goofed somewhere.
Synaptic will not work at all. It gives me the following message in a window when I click on System-Administration-Synaptic Package Manager:

E: Malformed line 46 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)

E: The list of sources could not be read.

Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.

E: _cache->open() failed, please report

I have absolutely no idea how to fix or what to do next.
I don't know what malformed line ..... means .
I'm using Ubuntu 7.0.4 on a PC.

If anyone has a solution, please let me know in the simplest of terms since I am very new to Linux.

Thanks.

Solved.
I commented out line 46 using the # sign at the beginning of the line.
Restarted Synaptic and it works.

I was trying to add sources and apparently mucked things up. I now get the same error as the first poster. Can somebody please tell me what I have to change to make Synaptic and everything work again?
thanks

Open your sources.list file with "gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list"
Overwrite the contents with the following:
# This sources.list was generated for you by Sorgen-1.1.0 - Coded by Kiwinote

# the ubuntu security repository
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-security main restricted universe multiverse

# the ubuntu repository
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty main restricted universe multiverse

# the ubuntu updates repository
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-updates main restricted universe multiverse
Now execute the command "sudo apt-get update"
