View Full Version : The Price is Right

For the past few days, I've been sick as a dog. Somehow over the years, when I'm out of work or school because of illness, it's become tradition to watch The Price is Right.

It's obviously a money maker. The prizes given away are obviously paid for by the manufacturer just for the advertisement they get for free. But for some reason I love that show. Everyone there wants to be the big winner, but there's also some hardcore altruism (if such a thing exists) going on there. When someone is on stage bidding on something, everyone in the crowd is SCREAMING what they think the price is, wanting to see everyone win. It's an interesting look at humanity.

Sorry for the total randomness of this thread, it's just something that struck me as interesting ;)

I haven't watched TPIR in a very long time, but it used to be a sickness/summer tradition for me, too. It was always fun to watch them play Plinko. ;)

I'm kinda surprised Bob Barker is still alive, though. :p

I love Plinko, I haven't seen it all week. Quite upsetting.

Well, have you *seen* this page? It's amazing.

Also, I guess this is somehow related, since it's daytime TV:

A few weeks ago I learned how the People's Court works. Actually, I looked it up because my wife and I couldn't decide if these people were actors, or what.

The real story is quite interesting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_People's_Court (3rd paragraph)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge_Judy (4th paragraph)

So it is real after all, with a "catch".

TPIR is one of the few contemporary pieces of "Americana." When Bob Barker dies they'll take him to the taxidermist and then stand him in the entrance to the TV section of the Smithsonian.

I don't watch it often any more because I don't watch much TV period. But it's still fun to tune in now and then for the showcase showdown. How can you not love pretty models demonstrating stuff like "fun ways to get wet!"

Plinko is my favorite!

That show really needs to get some male Barker Beauties, though. I mean, come on! What is your market?

What is really dissapointing is when the second showcase sucks donkey's nuts and the person gave up their chance at a 1700 btu Barbecue and a year's supply of pork for a lightshade, carpeting and some floor wax.

*My* pets are spawed and neutered.

*blinks*

Ironman? Oooohhh I assume you're talking about the comic book character turned tv show character. Yeah I think there was a movie a while back but I could be wrong.

I thought at first you were talking about a price is right character or game or something *L*

Actually, one of the things that's kinda cool is that Bob Barker still uses that old-*** microphone, which you can normally see its cord going under one of the big doors or something. :p

i'm still wondering how they fund it...

do you have to buy a ticket to have the chance of being on the show?

LOL! I saw this game at the Two Stupid Dogs cartoon at Cartoon Network! Didn't realize this game actually exists! Never seen it on tv... but I liked the cartoon!

I imagine Ford and Chevy, and all the others who give them prizes, just GIVE them away. That's a lot of free advertising. They don't just ANNOUNCE the prizes, they PUSH them. They talk about how great it is for a few minutes THEN the game starts. Considering how wide their demographic is, that's one of the best ways to advertise.

This post made me laugh. This show must have been on forever, because I remember when I was a kid watching it when I was home sick or during the summer. It was one of those few shows where you could watch with your mom.

Now, during summer vacation, I catch my 15 yr old son watching it to. A simple show, has never changed its premise, and still piulls them in every day. What is the secret?

Plinko is great. I have always wanted to spend the wheel. I would just like to know what it feels like to do it.

Are you kidding me?

When I was that age me and some of my friends accumulated a stash of nudie mags that ended up becoming a sort of currency between us. I got a 3HP go-kart motor, a Kiss Destroyer LP, and a stack of Gallery magazines from my buddy in trade for just the Playboy magazine where Janice Pennington was the centerfold.

All these years later, I think I got screwed.
