Tried it with au. default, with us, and without anything.

looked around at some of the posts

I verified dns resolution with ping
ping yahoo.com
PING yahoo.com (216.109.112.135) 56(84) bytes of data.

cat /etc/resolv.conf

I tried this:

cd /var/lib/apt/lists
sudo rm * -f
cd partial
sudo rm * -f
sudo apt-get update

I made sure I can resolve & reach the archive

Any ideas where to look next or what the problem might be?

I think the repos have been shut down, do to it not being supported anymore. Instead, substitute US with old-releases, or better yet, UPGRADE! If you cant run the livecd, just use the alternate CD. it is worth it, trust me. ;)

Hello :)

As smartboyathome said, the archives for breezy are not on the main servers any longer.
Have a look here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3026621&postcount=13
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/

So you can, if you prefer, change your sources.list and keep breezy, provided you are aware of the drawbacks mentioned by fujitsu.

Thanks for the posts. I had feared this would be the answer. I just hate to bother a working machine that is mission critical to my family.

but to go forward, guess will need to do something. Thanks for the help

@ asalford:

That said, if you really want to be using a completely unsupported and likely insecure release, you can replace archive.ubuntu.com with old-releases.ubuntu.com, which still hosts the (no longer updated) repositories for warty, hoary and breezy.
If you change your sources.list, you can still keep breezy. There wont be any security updates (and this has been the case since breezy became unsupported), but you can still install packages if you need so.

changed the breezy line to dapper and was able to get a successful upgrade. Thanks to all for your help :)
