Hi,
Just wondering if someone can assist with this issue.
I have installed ubuntuserver in a Windows box VMWare machine, and have it booting to the terminal start fine.
What i'm after is a command to give me a basic install from here if i can get it.
I am a total starter here, and this is purely using commands i found shown on the forum, and things i thought were right, pardon any stupid one's please.

I started with :

sudo apt-get install xorg and gdm

( this originally included gnome-common aswell, but this put in a complete, unwanted , desktop environ , so i tried it without it)
I know xorg is part of the x-window enviroment, but i'm unclear if it is needed or not, gdm is graphical display manager, and i'm sure it must be needed for the background to be rendered (guessing)

This 1st command gave me an ubuntu light orange desktop, with a black terminal in the top right corner.OK almost perfect straight off.

From here, i did apt-get install firefox and synaptic.OK both run fine.

Questions :

The screen has no taskbar, thus the firefox and synaptic windows cannot be made full 1024 x 768 res. Not a big issue, as it's to be a server after all, but i wish to use samba(it is installed - but i cant see my other pc's with jags -- need to know the correct name for terminal server client too please, i tried apt-get tsc, nothing came up, tried terminal server client, nothing either, i know it exists, but don't know it's correct package name).

The aim is to have the server boot, open to a blank background, with a less than basic theme, providing me with a taskbar solely to have shortcuts for terminal, networking (internet and LAN) and a few other's and as an FTP/WebServer box.
So can this task be acheived first off ? or will the getting the taskbar require additional support for icons and links, etc. ?? I'm hoping not to have to install any themes or such if possible, unless someone has a tiny little one to share if it is vital to have......
The goal is an under 800Mb install if possible.
Is this possible, with 0-5% wasted hdd space or so(wasted on unneeded icons and softwares) ?? The smaller and faster the better.
Or am i dreaming? Anyone interested in assisting? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
