It just freezes? Any suggestions. NO I DON"T WANT TO REINSTALL UBUNTU OR STEAM. It would work before with out problems and a few hours ago this started happening. I would have to hold down the power button and it seems fine before I run steam then counter strike.

BTW: This is a laptop

Hp Pavilion zv5000
1.1gb ram
Ati Mobility Radeon IGP 9000 64mb

It seems to last longer with out freezing if I leave my laptop off longer (playing cs:1.6) then try again.

NEED HELP ASAP

Damnit dude, wait more then an hour before bumping, give it a day then come back and bump. Play in offline mode and see if it still freezes.

Don't have offline on cs 1.6. Also I bump a lot because when ever I make a thread that I really need help in no one answers for a while and when it is not as important I get a lot of answers. Here comes the silence :(.

With the extremely short description in mind, this is only a guess: Your laptop is stressed and overheats. Try to put a book or something under the back of it to increase airflow.

Or you could play aisleriot.

Yea I was thinking of that and I don't have my special screwdriver to open the fan part and clean it so I want more options please thanks for your support :).

You need a screwdriver to sit your laptop on top of a book? You must have some trippy books.

Anyway, stick a book under it and if that doesnt work, go find your screwdriver, clean all the fans out (C/GPU) and give it another go.

Edit: Actually i have had this problem in Source, does the screen just freeze up unexpectedly, but the image of Counter Strike stays on the screen? Couple of ways to fix that :

1) More RAM (Unless you have loads)
2)Dont play in maps with lots of glass or water
3)Tone the GFX down to minimum and see if it is still crashing

Nooooooo. I have a cooling fan under it. LOL I use the screw driver to open the fan part of the laptop. . .

I must have lost it today. Im sure we were talking about putting books under laptops.

Ah well. Try the other stuff in that post and if its still crashing, go annoy valve. You might get something free.

1) More RAM (Unless you have loads) ME - 1gb
2)Dont play in maps with lots of glass or water ME - I didn't I just play any normal map and it happens to me
3)Tone the GFX down to minimum and see if it is still crashing ME - cs 1.6 doesn't have those options like source games do.

Yea the indicator lights (phisicly on the computer) go off too just the power light is on after it happens.

Well my account is banned and I'm borrowing my friends account (we used to share my account but he banned it so he owed it to me since he has almost all the games (he bought games and put them on my account then bought almost all of them for 90$). Also its linux so they are just going to say that " we do not support Linux so its your problems not ours".

Hi first of, don't bump a thread like that, next time you will just get your thread closed as result.

To allow us to provide better help give details.

What graphic card ? graphic drivers installed ? cedega or wine ? if wine which version with which options ? If you use wine have you read the corresponding appdb page ?

Wine (xp is the only thing I have changed) and the information is in the first post. . . . .

Sorry no infos about the direct rendering status, wine version and wine configuration in the first post, you don't tell as well if you have read the counter strike appdb entry which is what anyone with a problem with wine must do before posting.

Oh, wine is the latest version and this happened before in windows but then I cleaned (literally) laptop and was fine.

Underlined I have no idea what it is or how to find it or I'm not to familiar with those abbreviations.

Did you tried any other game? If still freeze (the other game) this is definitely heat problem. So the solution is to make your place more comfortable for the laptop. (like the book,or maybe an aircontition...:):) ).
If in the other game you dont have the same problem, then we ll focus in Stream and Ubuntu.
Be sure that the other game have many "needs" in cpu too, dont try any mame game.
Anyway i need more infos to help you..so pls try what i said and if you dont solve your problem try to give more infos (how often it freezes..is always in same server..etc)

Well I said it lasts longer with out freezing when I leave it off for a while and sometimes it freezes when its loading any server, but it doesn't freeze when I'm off it I can have steam running and it wont freeze. I'm going to clean it after i get this resolved because it gets very annoying. When it freezes the sound goes off and all functionality is lost. When it freezes on the server loading screen I can only move the cursor.

Oh, wine is the latest version and this happened before in windows but then I cleaned (literally) laptop and was fine.Ouch, this is no good :(

exit the wine problem theory IMO

Otherwise to test direct rendering status type in a terminal :
glxinfo |grep renderYou should see direct rendering: yes if enabled.
Then the appdb is the Wine Application Database which regroup all the tutorial/ support and fix to common used apps :
http://appdb.winehq.org/

However if you had problems under windows as well this is more likely to be hardware issue than software issue.

Oh, I remember that it said yes. I am going to the site. On windows it was mainly the over heating and cs worked fine until I logged on my friends account. . .

take a hack saw and cut about an 6x6 inch squair hole located neer the fan port then put a deskfan blowing on the hole you just made

should works perfect no over heating problems

o yea and STOP Bumping so much usually people only bump after a long time when their post isnt on the first or second page

I'm not doing that it would look very ugly and my right leg would get hit by the fan a lot.

Ok, to solve your immediate problem suspend your laptop off the desk. Get two books and put them under the laptop. Grab a house fan and have it blow onto the laptop. If it still freezes that it probably isn't the cooling.

Listen you guys don't understand. I have a cooling fan for laptops. I want to be solved some other way I GOT THE OVER HEATING PROBLEM SOLVED SINCE WINDOWS LIKE A FEW MONTHS BEFORE UBUNTU THEN IT WORKED AND IT WORKED IN UBUNTU UNTIL I LOGGED INTO MY FRIENDS ACCOUNT THEN IT STARTED SCREWING UP. Sorry its just that you guys have been going on that point for to pages. I want a software solution please.

Im not really clear at what point the game freezes? is it as you open it? or is it after you try to join a server?

if you open a terminal window, and launch steam from there what happens?

to do this: click applications -> accessories -> terminal

type:

cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/
wine steam

aside from the fixme:: errors, do you see anything useful in the terminal output? If you cant see it because the game is fullscreen, try reducing the resolution in the game to less than that set in your gnome preferences. then in the console type:

winecfg

goto the 'graphics' tab and select 'emulate virtual desktop' and set its resolution to the same or greater than what you set in counter strike.

now launch counter strike like i described previously and see if it tells you anything useful in the console. if you can copy and paste the output here or if you can't try writing down some of the messages that dont start with fixme::

EDIT: I know this sounds mean, but it is intended to be taken kindly: cool it with the bumping, we would like to help you, but you realize others need help too. your problem, and you personally are not any better or more important than any others. be respectful of others in the community, especially your fellow users. your 3 pages deep in this thread and there is so much bumping that no one wants to read clear to the end to help you. instead of typing 'bump' type what you have done in the mean time, and the results of your attempts to correct this. you have google, you have ubuntu's search feature, and i imagine if your using ubuntu you must at least be familiar with independantly finding/trying solutions. Counter strike and steam apps in general are not fully supported by all configurations. recent fglrx and nvidia drivers both cause freezing or inability to open the game. there are tons of reasons that your game 'would just freeze' without anything to go on, this thread would grow into the hundreds of pages (waiting and trying all random suggestions). If you want us to help you, we need more than just your machine specs and version of ubuntu. don't expect any help from me or anyone else if your next response is a bump, or is in all caps. these people are offering you their time and effort to help you, DO NOT YELL at them!

I gave you the specs and it freezes but keeps the image while on a server**. I also said it freezes sometimes when its loading a server.

try using winecfg to change the sound to oss

also, i would recommend playing in a virtual desktop. i am currently unable to play counter strike in steam for what i imagine can only be similar reasons. mine freezes while loading a server at about 25-30%, i cant even get into a game. I had (prior to edgy) not had many significant stability related issues with wine&steam&counterstrike. i imagine with updates to wine this will grow better or worse, but there are many having these problems. when answers are available that help me, i will offer advice in this thread. good luck guys.
