most of Ubuntu users stick with Gnome (followed by KDE and XFCE), including me.

i, too like Flux when playing games, or other high-load activites, but the lack of GUI config tools (to configure the system, not flux itself) just gets on my nerves sometimes...

One day I installed fluxbox to try it because people talk so highly of it. I logged into it and....there I was. All I could see was a clock and a very weak right click menu (compared to xfce's).

Scared shitless that a window manager could lack something like a starter bar (or any application panel of any kind) I ran back to Gnome.

I'm too much of a wuss for hard *** fluxbox.

actually i used to use fluxbox quite a bit when i was running fedora core 3. i had it all futuristic looking with the artwiz font set, some slick looking themes and some minimalistic wallpapers. there is also an autogeneratemenu package that will sort all your programs and place them in the menu for you.

i'm not sure why i stopped using it, maybe because i installed e17 after i started using ubuntu. flux was always kinda my backup wm (whether i was using FVWM or GNOME). now i use e17 as my secondary wm.

in truth tho i think there are a couple of window managers that feel lighter than flux and are more full-featured (e17, XFCE) and that is why i don't use it as much.

I prefer Enlightenment (dr 17) to Fluxbox, and run it as my wm sometimes (within and without GNOME). For one, it's a heck of a lot faster (and better looking) than Flux.

GNOME is still my primary environment, it kind of grows on you.

I would use e17 as my Gnome window manager if I could ever find a way to replace the ugly default theme it comes with.

I like Gnome, but as far as lightweights go, Window Maker is my fave so far. It makes me feel like I'm living in the '90s again :)

Yeah, you're a wuss. You'd probably scream if I sat you down in front of a machine with just Openbox. You don't even get a clock or a taskbar with Openbox. >^..^<

But don't feel bad. I chicken out when faced with TWM.

I've kinda grown accustomed to Gnome too.

I've read a lot about E17. Does anyone know if E17 (or maybe even Metacity) comes with a 'lines' theme like I have right now in Sawfish. I can't stand useless window-borders / titlebars. :)?

I used flux for awhile under fedora core... when I ditched fedora I ditched flux to... unfortunately the whole right click menu thing gets annoying after awhile.

actually i've found the exact opposite. for the last year or two i've been using litestep and bblean for windows and anytime i ever use a computer without them i get incredibly frustrated at having to move to a left hand corner to access the menu. after sorting my network card and my sound out installing fluxbox was the number one priority for me after i installed ubuntu. add to that the fact that with windows i couldn't find any way to customize the menu, i've only used gnome sparingly but it seem to have the same problem. i cant deal with not having the shortcuts to i need right at the top of the menu.

now if only fluxbox taskbar was as good xtaskbar for litestep and systembarex for bblean

No...I would ask "Isn't openbox just a replacement for metacity? Why am I using it by itself?" Some might think I'm very pro command line, but truth is I never used Linux for years because of the GUIs.

Thank god for Gnome.
