Okay, well, everything used to work perfectly, but i logged in today and my cube had flattened into a piece of paper! I only had 2 workspaces... so i opened the workspace manager prefs and there was only 1 listed as being active there... i rebooted, and now it shows up as 4 in the taskbar, but only 2 still show up in compiz's cube... and when i select different workspaces, it's like selecting another "cube" with 2 sides to each... i'm so confused.

Same here... For me, each workspace contains a cube. So if I have 3 workspaces, I basically have 12 total desktops...

no one knows how to fix it though?

For what ever reason, the Gnome workplace switcher and Compiz don't actually play very well together. In order for the workplace switcher to function with Compiz, you need to set its preferences to only one workplace.(I know that's counter intuitive.) Then in the Compiz settings manager goto General Options>Desktop Size, set the value for Horizontal Virtual Size to four. That should put you back to normal....
