To my delight gears of war has been officially been announced to be ported to the PC. This happened at E3 when two titles, Gears Of War and Pikmin were co-announced as being ported to the PC.
Before you start dancing with joy I think you should know that the PC features which where announced included online co-op via live for Windows. OH NO. What does this mean for Linux gaming. Has epic thrown in the towel when it comes to bringing out native Linux versions of the game. What should we do? Make our voices heard of course.
You know what to do :

The big problem with porting to Linux, as far as I can see, is that there is no way that you will be able to use Live for Windows, which allows you access to browse, join, and play on Xbox Live listed servers.

That's the whole point of the Games for Windows and Live for Windows strategies: blur the line between console and PC once and for all and just create one Microsoft Gaming Community.

It's not the end of gaming on Linux, it's just another hurdle to clear.

Yes I know what live for windows is. Its another direct x another precaution put in place by Microsoft to have a monopoly on games companies.
I was really shocked because at last years E3 event the lead designer of epic games was interviewed on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC gaming.
He said that epic games would not be going through live for windows as that would tie them down to a specific gaming platform.
He also discussed how dell are killing PC gaming with their integrated graphics.
But how hypocritical is that. I know Microsoft are the publishers of gears of war for the xbox but they could have changed publishers for the PC if they felt strongly about the subject.
But instead they sold their souls to the devil :(

I don't think they really had a choice. Microsoft needed a top tier title for Xbox360, and Halo 3 was still too far away. Gears was a very carefully crafted title with alot of help and input from Microsoft from what I have read...I don't think Epic is free to change publishers as a result.

I wouldn't say they sold their soul....Unreal 3 is going to have a Linux client, so they still care about Linux users, but Gears is probably too tied to Microsoft to get a port or installer. I could be wrong though.

This will never happen. Sorry bud.

But they're in bed with Microsoft, and making a linux port would be like saying: "You're the 4th best I've ever had."

Gears is going mac as well. Doesn't this bode well for a potential linux version?

Gears was a showcase as much as a game.

The big thing of course is the open/closed source thing.
Releasing it to open source makes a program very open to being ripped open and broken or theived.

so don't make it open source. just make it compatible with linux. I don't see why everything on linux needs to be open source.

I think you're confused about the way software works.

Porting games for Linux won't make them any easier or harder to crack and pirate than they already are.
I watch games in the newsgroup scene get cracked and released on usenet in 3-15 days for ***dows as well as Mac.

so don't make it open source. just make it compatible with linux. I don't see why everything on linux needs to be open source.

Everything doesn't need to be open source, it's nice, but there are many wonderful closed source games released/ported for Linux.
This is a common misconception among computer users, software development companies, and the general public.

John,

Sorry but Microsoft is the publisher of Gears of War. They decide what
platforms it goes on.

There will be Linux support for Unreal Tournament 3 however.

Well not what I was hoping for but at least it clarifies that there will indeed be a native port of Unreal Tournament 3 for Linux.
