deathfalls

Hey guys, I'm fairly new to Linux... trying to learn a bit. Just installed Hoary tonight and thought I'd try to get RtCW working. The first problem I encountered was it seemed to hang at a black screen, I could move the cursor and see some of the desktop. After doing some searching, it seemed that it could be a sound problem. I followed the instructions in this (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=44753&highlight=happy+ALSA) thread, and I was able to get to the main menu in the game.
This is where another problem popped up, apparently the game was trying to write a config file, and it didn't have permission, so it wouldn't load a map. I was able to solve that by doing "sudo wolfsp".
So, here's my questions:
Is there a better way to solve the sound issue? So that I could hear system sounds, etc? I haven't tried using XMMS or anything else yet, so I don't know how what I did will affect that.
Also, is it normal that I would have to run the game with sudo? Just thought I would ask, as I never saw that mentioned anywhere when I was searching for information on installing the game.
