Why does ubuntu still have six-month-old drivers (the january 8.8 release)? The latest version is 8.14...I'm sure lots of ATI users would like an update :) AFAIK, mtippett (ati guy) encourages distro packeging, why is ubuntu so far behind?

You can still install the newer ati drivers; I had to myself to get my laptops X300 working.

I know, I have done so. But that's not my point.

Same reason no packages change after a release (except security fixes)- it increases support problems too much. That why backports was made, but usually the team doesn't touch stuff like this- they like things from the main and universe. Plus, the newest drivers might not even be in Breezy yet.

If you need the latest and greatest, use the neat new ATI installer. If you want your package manager to ALWAYS have the latest and greatest...well...thats the point of Gentoo I think...
