Does anyone still play Half-Life Deathmatch? That is one of my all-time favorite games. I re-installed it recently but could not get it to work online.

If H-LD works on Linux via an emulator does that mean Counter-Strike Source does as well?

I was actually running HL in windows.
My intent was to see if I could run it via wine once I got it to work.

I installed Cedega and read a little about using it. Just to clarify, games are installed with Cedega as opposed to simply running games via wine that are installed on a windows paritition, correct?

I have a copy of the original half-life which includes counrter strike. Can I use this, or do I need to get a new copy?

Games are installed via Cedega. Yes, you need to reinstall them. Cedega basically creates a fake c:/ for the game. I have succesfully installed Steam and played Steam games with it on Linux. To get sound you need to do the Alsa+Esd trick and make Alsa your default output sound. I do not have it installed on linux at the moment, but i have installed it several times.

I was playing CS a few hours ago on Windows.. heh

More info on working and non working Cedega games, check out

Carlc, If you have a Steam account, by now you should now that you don't even need the disc to get HL or CS. You simply need to download a 542kb Steaminstall.exe file, login and download the game. And yes, CS works on Linux.

thanks, I will give it a try!

I did setup a steam account when I tried playing HL Deathmatch via steam so I need to try and remember what I used for my login, I am glad you point that out though because I did not realize that I no longer needed the CD's

Glad I could help. Just make sure you remember your Steam account password or the email you used to register. And do _not_ use shady Non Steam apps with that account. Your account will get banned and you would have wasted all your money.

Like you probably remember, when HL2 came out on Nov 28th, 2004. People predownloaded it without even having discs way before the release date. The game was unlocked in due time, but I'm just trying to explain how much the discs are not needed.

that is good to know, that way I will not have to go through all the upgrades which was a worry that I had of tying to install CS in linux, it is one thing to install the program and another to install all of the subsequent upgrades
