Yes, I have a 6600GT in PCI Express and it works just fine.

I think for the drivers you have to go to nvidias and get them from there. I hear that ubuntu isn't using their latest drivers because of some problems with things crashing. I don't know if any other version less than 7667 will support the 7800GTX. So you won't be able to use the nvidia-glx package form the repos :???:
Correct me if I'm wrong. I was going to get the 7800GTX, but it would unbalance my system. Too much power on my video card and a bad processor to go with it. So I'm sticking with a 6800GT. But however tell us how it goes! And don't forget to post your glxgears in that benchmark thing some have going on in here

Yeah I didnt think about that, I guess the drivers in the repos wouldnt support the card.
I was originally going to get a 6800GT but i think i may just go all the way and get a 7800, having said that if it is going to make my system unstable until they have ironed out all the bugs, is it really worth it?
aLSO Have you played any games under hoary with your 6800GT? If so what kind of performance do you get?
Cheers,

Sadly I have not played any games yet. I was going to get some basic components like a Barton 3000+ CPU, and a GeForce5700. But then I decided I wanted this computer for gaming so I got bigger stuff like an AMD64 and GeForce 6800GT. Of course as it got bigger so did the price :)
From what I hear it seems to run very good. I'm not looking to do my gaming from a Linux computer. I'm going to get XP Pro for it. I know it sounds bad, but it's a must. A lot of the games I like are not supported by Cedega. Which sucks, but I'm still going to give it a try.
If you get to playing any games before me, let me know through a PM what you got as far as benchmarks.

Yeah, that is my idea, Im going to mainly game in XP, or if I decide on buying a G5 instead of a PC, under Tiger.
I would love to play under hoary, and will use that if I can, trouble is I don't think cadega runs great under AMD64, so I may install hoary 32bit on it instead, which seems like a bit of a stupid thing to do if I have a 64 bit processor, but I will upgrade to 64bit once theres better support, flash player, java etc. (I'm using hoary on AMD64 right now)
I think in the bigger picture this is a linux problem, all my friends at uni on my computing course dont even have linux installed, and the major complaint is it doesnt play games, and if it does,m its not as quick as XP.
Plus you have to play for Cadega, if there was a free open source solution, I think it would be great for the linux community, my friends will no longer have any excuse not to use linux!

I have a PCI-E 6800GT coupled with an AMD64 3500+ and use the 32bit ubuntu for ease of gaiming. I only really play id games like Enemy Territory and Doom 3 so I don't use windows at all.
Performance wise if you take Doom 3 as a guideline (which is pretty intensive) I can play with customised 'High Quality' settings at 1600x1200 (no AA as I don't see that it's needed at this res) and it's all pretty darn good :)

Thats awesome man!!! Those are the games I'm going to be playing with the same darn specs!!! However I'm not a Linux newbie so I know how to game properly under AMD64. If everything else fails, then I'm done and I will install 32-bit.
Anyhow that's cool. As for the guy who said that Cedega costs money. That's downright stupid and ignorant not to pay 5 dollars every 3 months. You are getting an OS for FREE. UBUNTU isn't costing you any money whats so ever. $5 dollars every 3 months is not that much. If you can't afford that you have some serious problems. I know college costs a lot, but 5 dollars I can find from recycling. Seriously. I'm quite frankly going to do both. Gaming on XP and Ubuntu. I want to stick to Linux thought because it's better to have 1 OS. Instead of booting into 2 different one. But seriously $5 dollars is not a lot to contribute for a community has given you so much. Specially these guys who try to make these games work.
You are mistaken Open Source and Free-nes. ;-)

Good to hear its all running smoothly, did you have any troubles setting it all up or was it all pretty easy to do?

Cedega is open source. It's released under the LGPL. You can access the CVS from here (http://transgaming.org/cvs/). It's not free because it's being done by an actual company, and companies need to make profit - so they charge for their work (novel idea!). Open Source != Free, that's a misconception and you should try to get past it.

Moreover, I hear the wine cvs has the directx9 patches included nowadays so I'd expect some really good compatability to be coming through with regular wine very soon, if not now :)
Re: Jet2k5
I ended up on 32bit ubuntu as the chroot method just wasn't playing ball with ET although this may have been before I sorted my onboard sound woes. Maybe things have changed since I last tried but I remember it being a real pain and I have other users of this PC to consider. Anyway if you get it all working on the 64bit ubuntu, please let me know that way I'll know to try the 64bit version again sooner rather than later :)
