Are you sure the router is not hidding the essid?

Yes, I'm sure. I think the problem is with the NDISWrapper, it is lacking in a lot of features with the Broadcom wireless card.

PS- I am using a broadcom with ndiswrapper and I dont have any of the problems mentioned above. And by the way...did I say thank you...

I really like the idea. It didn't work for me while using wpa. Is there something I am missing, or is wpa not yet supported? I am using the ipw2200 1.0.4 driver and current firmware along with wpa_supplicant.

You understand this is an applet for gnome-panel?
try running at a console gtkwifi run-in-window, it might show in the console what is wrong. let me now :P

I doesn't support wpa yet. It's sad but i understand why it doesn't, wpa_supplicant is kinda awkward, bsoft wants to make it possible but he has to figure it out first.

Nice tool. Seems to be working fine... if only I had a wireless network to test it on!

Perhaps this calls for a Caramel Machiatto down at the local Starbucks. ;)

thanks for fixing version 1.08.it works great now.

when i place the icon on the panel, it automatically starts up when i logon.is there a way of starting it up as and when i require wireless access apart from running gtkwifi run-in-window ?

it would also be great if the wireless indicator (for my laptop it is lighted when the internal card is activated) can be switched off once i disable close the gtkwifi applet.

Thanks for what sounds like a great applet. I can't wait to try.

Two questions, though, before I do: I have an IPW2200 running 1.0.0 (the best driver which works consistently with my machine/ubuntu 5.04).

1. Any reports of use with this card/driver, good or bad?
2. If I experience problems, how can I uninstall it completely ?

Thanks so much in advance!

xhaker

ifrflyer: it works great with ipw2200, infact i use the 1.0.4 drivers. to remove the applet just remove it from the gnome-panel or remove the package from your system with synaptic or in the commandline.

gtkwifi-1.08.1.deb (http://4elites.com/gtkwifi-1.08.1.deb)
For a newbie, how would I go about installing this? I also am currently runing Kubuntu, will this be an issue? This looks good.

xhaker
July 21st, 2005, 09:58 AM
yes, there's a problem installing this in a kde environment. it can't be integrated in kde panels. you can still install this and run it in a seperate window using the command gtkwifi run-in-window. To install you just need to sudo dpkg -i gtkwifi....deb like any other .deb package. it might get problematic because you might not have all the packages necessary in kubuntu

if you still can't see it there, try restarting gnome-panel

Yeah it was there. Thanks. ONE MORE PROBLEM:
It sees my WAP but cannot associate because it does not know the SSID, which Is hidden. It's trying to connect, it seems, to [no] SSID at MAC address foo:foo with password xyz. Any way of telling it the SSID name? I could n't find it in preferences.

I just installed this, and everything is running fine. The applet is able to detect networks, connect to them, and display info such as signal strength. The problem is that I can no longer access the internet on that box. As I mentioned, I'm connected to the network and have a decent signal strength (it wasn't any different before installing gtkwifi). However, I can't access or ping any sort of website. Is gtkwifi to blame here? I mean this problem occured right after installing it. The card I'm using is a DWL-G510, and I haven't had to install or set anything special up to get it to work.

i had the same problem some time ago.. i remember i had to play with System -> Administration -> Networking and maybe a reboot or service restart

I have installed gtkwifi successfully, got the applet added to the panel so that when the system startup, I don't have to type "gtkwifi run-in-window" in console.

My AP is secure with WEP (used to secure with WPA-PSK when I was with MS), WEP key #4 is assigned as the default key. Although gtkwifi could see my wireless network, but when I try to connect to it, it doen't get any IP address from the dhcp server. When I re-assign the AP to use key #1 as the default key, it works.

Therefore, each time, before I start gtkwifi, I have to type "iwconfig wlan0 key restricted [4] xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xx" (where [4] refers to the WEP key and xxx refers to key value.)

Does anyone know whether gtkwifi could set all the key values and set the default key to be used. Something like Windows XP wireless manager.

Thanks in advance. From what I can see, gtkwifi is great and has the potential to further develop.

:-)

Thanks.

I still do have that remaining problem:
It sees my WAP but since the SSID is hidden, I cannot associate because it does not know the SSID.

It's trying to connect, it seems, to
[no] SSID

at the proper MAC address for the WAP, with the password I give it.

Is there any way of my telling gtkWifi the SSID name? I couldn't find it in preferences.

Thanks in advance

regards,

GTKWifi is written in Python, so there are no CPU dependencies. AMD64 should work just fine.

Of course, I've never tried it ;).

Installing the gtkwifi 1.08.1 is great it works so well with the wirless card i have. The problem though is that when i disable wlan0 to connect through my ethernet using eth0. The wifi reactivates wlan0 automatically nearly every 5 min which result in loss of connection through the internet.

Now if i use eth0 i have to deactivate wlan0 nearly every 5 min is there a remedy to this bug?

I have seen a lot of you guys praising how good this applet is, to me, I have no luck. Just wanna check, are you guys using WEP for your wireless connection? If so, which key is being used?

I have a Dlink DWL-G650 rev 3, which is not installed by native driver, and I have to use ndiswrapper to install the driver instead, could this be the problem? I am using key #4 for my WEP and sometimes, gtkwifi sees the wireless network, and sometimes don't, and when I press connect, it asked for the key and I simply enter my key #4 value, but to no avail. Could someone help me please.

Thanks in advance.

I've just given it a try on my ThinkPad G41 (with the atheros driver) and it fails to detect any APs in the area (iwlist scan shows 3 of them) and breaks networking. To get networking back I have to unload all the atheros&wifi related modules, restart hotplug (or load the modules by hand) and reinitialize all the networking (either via init.d/networking restart or by hand). Running with 'run-in-window' shows nothing, no errors in syslog/dmesg either. What I noted, though, is that 'iwlist ath0 scan' works quite unreliably - sometimes it shows just one AP, sometimes all of them, sometimes none. Is anybody using the applet on a machine like mine (or at least one with the atheros driver) and, if yes, do you experience similar problems?

Regards,

Nope - not using WEP. I filter MAC addresses on the router, which is enough security for me.

Yes, I'm sure. I think the problem is with the NDISWrapper, it is lacking in a lot of features with the Broadcom wireless card.

i am having a similar problem. the tool states that my card doesn't support scanning, however, i am able to scan using the iwlist command. can i enter my SSID's manually somehow?

thank you for your efforts!

edit: i've rebooted since the post and it appears to be working better, it is now scanning, since i also updated to the latest version! :)

just get it from CVS in sourceforge.net, you'll get the next version of gtkwifi, 1.09 :)
1.09 is still in the works, but you can try it out, it's working fine and has some new features like gnome panel transparency support, connection to ad-hoc networks, connection to hidden AP's and bugfixes :)

I can confirm that it runs fine on AMD64. It'll also run in a window on KDE but it isn't very practical, of course. It looks a lot more useful than KwifiManager.

I have the same problem using a Linksys with the Realtek RTL8180L driver (Ndiswrapper). My wireless network works well when I use the 'normal' network connector. When i run the GTK Wifi app, I loos the connection. I can see my network, but when I try to connect to it, it has problems with the DHCP and there is no light in the LINK light.

How do I fix this?

When I use the applet it seems to work with my Linksys WPC54G v2 card using the NDISWrapper but I cannot connect to any networks, and when I look at the card details it is trying to use the default TI ACX11 kernel drivers, like many others it seems I can use my card fine using the standard GNOME network monitor but GTK Wiki refuses to use the NDISWrapper driver for my card.

I've been using this utility for a few weeks now, and I have to say that I absolutely love it. But I have a few suggestions on how to make it even better.

1) Listing the signal strength in the network browser. At my school, we have one large wireless network, with many many repeaters. I pretty much choose a repeater at random out of the list, as I am too lazy to simply use iwlist, and that's what your utility is for. It would be nice to choose the one that's closest to me.

2) WPA support, as previous people mentioned. I pretty much steer clear of WPA in Linux, as it's too much of a pain to deal with.

3) This doesn't quite affect me at this point... but I have 2 wireless cards in each of my computers. It would be nice to be able to choose the default card to connect with... or even better... RAID the connections... but I'm not sure if this is even possible (can anyone tell me if it is possible to use two connections simultaneously for extra bandwidth?).

4) Perhaps a way of writing some of the network configurations to the default network connection list in Linux... so that it doesn't fail when configuring network connections at boot. (Just an annoyance, no biggie. ctrl-c is my friend).

etc
October 5th, 2005, 11:15 PM
It's working great, but for the first maybe 5 minutes, it likes to disconnect and reconnect to my network, but after that it's fine. Also, it constantly reports the signal strength as being -1%.

I'm using a Netgear WG511 (Prism chipset) PCMCIA card on a 802.11g network with WEP.

Thanks again!

P.S. until this does make it (hopefully) into the main distro you should try to get a sticky somewhere as this is really hard to stumble across. I've been using Ubuntu Breezy on my laptop for almost two months and this is the first I've heard of this.
