Just curious, what are some games that run wonderfully under WINE and are free, or are free and made for linux, that are high enough quality for you to recommend them to someone coming from Windows?

No offense, but most of those games look like they came off a playstation. I'm talking games that actually look somewhat modern, like Nexuiz, Wolfenstein:ET, etc.

If you're going to bother asking for suggestions, and don't like what you hear from it, maybe you should develop your own game?

Ah, the familiar old "Well I can only make ****, but if you want to call me on it you have to make something too."

hikaricore, by your standards, almost no one in society would be able to complain about just about anything. Is your car ****? It's not ford's fault, make your own if you don't like it. Have you ever bought a bad brand of cheese? Not their fault, why don't you go milk a cow and do it yourself? Have you ever ordered a computer part that fails out of the box? Well why don't you go make the circuit boards yourself!

That is the lamest excuse in the book. Just because someone doesn't make something doesn't mean they can't call it crap- think about how few people work in the television industry, compared to how many could tell you that MTV sucks. For the record, there ARE some good suggestions in this thread. Just posting a link to a bunch of random games is not.

And you're still stubborn...

What you don't seem to understand is that your definition of "Quality" is not the same as everyone
else's definintion of the word. If you're going to blindly ask for "Quality" games to interest ****dows
users to switch over to Linux without giving any solid criterea, then you really don't need to be responding
to those who are offering you their suggestions with a generic "this is crap" response. You got my standard
reply because I saw your standard attitude. Maybe I took your tone a little off what was meant by it, but I think
you really need to consider the way people are going to view your rash replies to avoid silly drama such as this.

Hi.

Just a thought on the threads.

Feba, I think what hikaricore is saying is that lots of people work really hard FOR FREE to make anything for Linux. Dissing them by calling their efforts "crap" isn't very nice or appreciative.

That being said, I understand your frustration. I down loaded several game to give them a try. Ktron was terrible to play, Konquest wasn't fun either. I deleted both right away. But who ever updated Moon Lander did a GREAT job. It is simple but hard, with nicely updated graphics.

Still, I think you can agree hikaricore that these games are mostly like we played on VIC 20 and Apple 1's.

So can we start again by asking " Are there any games out there for Ubuntu that have high end graphics and emmersive game play at least as good as Civilization or Star Quest or Mech Warrior or Doom?"

The only Windows game I was playing when I ditched XP in favor of a pure (as in dirty snow) Ubuntu system was Age Of Empires III. My neighbor and I used to play all the time and waste hours until my girlfriend would run around threatening to get nakid in the back yard if I didn't stop.

I sure miss her running around nakid.

Anyway, is there any way to play those kind of games under Ubuntu?

;)

If you want to show off what linux can do with games, then I recommend games that run on both platforms. Doom3, quake 4, Ut2004 etc. You could also try some games using wine, blizzard games are a good choice. The native games tend to run a little better than wine games, which can have the occasional bug. Games run through wine run at or below the level they run in windows, native games run at or above the level they run in windows. There are also loads of free and open source games available, but if your trying to convince someone to try linux, sometime it helps to have a game that they have played before.
