Hey, I've just finished preparing a project designed to make it easier to install packages. It works like this:

I've created an XML based format that describes the packages and repositories needed to install a program. Once my program, the ClickHere Client, is installed, you can point your web browser to one of these files using a special protocol, and the client will use the given information to install from the Ubuntu repositories.

I'm hoping it will make it easier for new users to find and install programs without having to use the command line (apt-get), or navigate through GUI's like Synpatic or Adept. I've also set up a website that has description files for installing every package in the Ubuntu repositories. Ultimately, I hope to see the file format adopted by a variety of distributions so software creators can simply provide a description file and end users can get the software from their distribution's repositories.

It's still in the early stages, so I'm looking for people interested in beta testing or making other contributions. If you're interested in trying it out or contributing, I invite you to visit clickhere.ausiv.com (http://clickhere.ausiv.com/) and take a look.

You might find this project/package interesting (as well as the whole website...).
