View Full Version : What Games Do You Play With Wine?

Concorde

I finally bit the bullet this past week and had to install a game for some must needed stress relieve. I always wanted to get into DOD:Source (played DOD for 5 years) but always had problems within in Windows (poor fps and latency issues). I was overwhelmingly surprised at how smooth its running on Fluxbox. I use Fluxbox just for gaming purposes and Ubuntu for other applications. The only problem that I have is getting my Mic to work in Ventrilo. Other than that it's a real joy to play with fast fps and solid gameplay. I have tried most of the HOWTOs to get it to work but it really don't bother me at the moment. Hey, I only have one vocal chord so I sound a bit funny while talking anyway :D

So what games have you played while using Linux?

Hey Orbjinzo, what server are you playing on? Can you recommend me one that doesn't have insanely high rates? Thanks!

KOTOR, KOTOR 2, Hitman Contracts, CoD... whatever I feel like trying on Wine this week.

I'm not big into online games anymore, too many jackasses playing, too hard too find good players.

I was at a LAN a while back (only running Linux), and there was some quake 3 action going on. I had the Linux native binaries for Q3 but couldn't get them to work without locking up at the beginning of the round. I found out after the LAN this was a common issue with Q3 in Linux with modern distros, but I didn't know this at the time and also didn't know the way to fix it.

My solution? Run Q3 for Windows using WINE. Worked perfectly, sound fine, netcode fine and no lockups. Probably helped that Carmack likes making portable code. :) As for regular gaming though, I much prefer finding native games that don't use WINE.

If I had more RAM I would play CSS/HL2, CS 1.6 under wine, but with only 512 RAM it doesn't run the best, So I have to dual boot into windows (:() to get it to run more playable (~70-40 FPS on source)

Oh I forgot Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, I would also play Sim City 3000 but it doesn't work under Wine for me... maybe messing with the settings might work...

Quake 2 Evolved - http://www.quake2evolved.com/news.htm
with high resolution texture packs - http://www-personal.umich.edu/%7Ejimw/q2/

I've always loved my Quake2 days. I found my quake 2 disc and installed it with wine. Because Quake 2 Evolved uses an exe to launch, I installed q2 with wine (yes i know you can copy the base paks and use a repository file).

After installing the high resolution texture packs with the new Quake 2 Evolved engine, the game is BEAUTIFUL.

How did you manage to run KOTOR 2 on wine? Whenever I try to run it I'm thrown back to my desktop with the resolution set to 640x480 =/ It runs fine with cedega tough.

That's because the opening cinematics are in 640x480 resolution and for some reason Wine doesn't handle major resolution changes from within your desktop manager very well. Installing and running in a Wine "virtual desktop" is the easiest way to compensate for that. If you want to run in full screen, then use a launch script to launch it in it's own X session. I do the same thing with KOTOR 1. You can't use the automatic update features through Wine (at least I've never got it to work), so you have to download an manually apply the patches. Updating KOTOR 1 introduces a copy protection problem to the game, requiring the use of a cracked .exe, so I don't bother updating it. Not sure if KOTOR 2 has the same problem though (been a while since I played).

Oh, also make sure you are using the latest version of Wine (currently 0.9.40).

Wow building up an impressive list here.
I recently copied over my Windows install of Star Trek Elite Force 2. Ran the EXE in WINE. It worked. NO problems AT ALL.

Star Trek Elite Force 2: 100% perfect
Return to Castle Wolfenstein: 100% perfect
Half Life 2: Good enough
Doom 3: (On nVidia anyway)
Wolfenstein Enemy Territory

MSDOS games in Dosbox:
Every Commander Keen that ive tried
Star Trek The Next Generation: A final Unity
Castle Wolfenstein (Not Wolf3D, the very first one)

Alot of these are Quake 3 engine games. Thats the iD Software magic.

A lot of people don't realize you can run a large number of Windows games through Wine. That kept me from committing to Linux for the longest time. I still dual-boot XP and Ubuntu, just so I can run the Windows games that don't work through Wine, but otherwise I am Linux full-time. I just got my 9 year old to start using it too, thanks to someone on this forum trying Lego Digital Designer in Wine (that's really the only Windows game he plays).

Halo (still in shock, read my how-to note, in my signature), Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, Delta Force, Morrowind, Warcraft 3, Half-life, Loads of games! I'm now fully committed to linux thanks to wine being able to run all my favorite games. The onl game that it can't run that I'm disappointed about is City of heroes/villains, but that runs under cedega with little problems. And besides, it's been a while since I tried to run it, and the most recent appdb test is with wine 0.9.29, so who knows. I'm quitting WOW net month and rejoining COH, so I'll give it a try then.

Please post your CoH/Wine experience here, I haven't played the game in a long time, but if it works in Linux, I may have to re-activate my account. I'm sure there are others who would be interested in your results too.

Right now, I play ADOM... HOMMII wouldn't install... my computer's specs are so great, it's mis-reading them! And here I thought I had a just-above-average system. Call of Duty won't install; and I'm assuming pretty much any multi-CD game won't since Wine doesn't read the second disc when I switch them out. That knocks out most every Windows game I have right now. What few I have, at any rate.

I got Ultima Collection installed, but I can't get any of that to work; DOSEmu doesn't actually work, and I can't find DOSBox (though it is installed...) A few other DOS games as well; but nothing works. As usual. At least Ubuntu can run Linux games; unlike SuSE.

Dosbox doesn't seem to install an icon. What you can do though is right click an msdos executable and go 'run with dosbox'.
If you don't have that option when rightclicking an EXE, click on properties instead. You can find a tab there for specifying what programs to load up EXE files with.

Or hit alt-f2, and type dosbox

Starcraft and Starcraft: Brood War. Runs perfectly including the cinematic cut-scenes. :) This is the only actively-played game at the moment.

Live for Speed. There are some texture-related glitches and shadow weirdness, but otherwise playable. The other problem is the massive steering wheel deadzone that appears to exist only in Linux. I've tried in-game settings to get rid of it, but to no avail. It also exists in TORCS, so I guess it's a system-level thing.

In the past, I used to play Warcraft 3 and Warcraft3: The Frozen Throne.

And I was indeed able to get Civ IV working on my machine. That was the last thing tying me to Windows for the past year or so, and although I haven't had Windows installed on my machine for over a month now, being able to play Civ IV means that I won't ever have a desire to reinstall it.

Ya know I think I'm in the same boat as you. Installing dosbox has unlocked the door to a whole lot of retro gaming. Check out software called 'dos32a'. It replaces the 'DOS4WG' extender that alot of MSDOS games used. Its like a tenth the size of dos4wg and is much more stable & allows lots of games to be played under dosbox.
http://dos32a.narechk.net/
Its open-source, of course :)

Instead of posting a help request in a month old thread that is not a troubleshooting topic, why don't you start your own thread and ask for help there? You are far more likely to get help that way.

I have tried most of the HOWTOs to get it to work but it really don't bother me at the moment. Hey, I only have one vocal chord so I sound a bit funny while talking anyway :D

So what games have you played while using Linux?

I play Tomb Raider II on wine :)

imperium galactica 2 :) You have to love that shizzle.

Plus command and conquer, rome total war, warrior kings... they're all good :)

OOOOH, and dungeon keeper 2! Now that is a sweet game.

Personally though I prefer not using wine. ut2004, neverwinter nights are my games of choice in that department :)

Those may (or may not..) help
You should try searching on these forums too, if you don't find anything just start a new thread in the appropriate area. You won't find much help here because noone knows about your problem here, this is for talking about games that we play, not problems.

I pretty much told him that already (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3165106&postcount=48), but he either doesn't understand or doesn't seem to be listening.

Hah! Looks like I have another one that works with the latest Wine (0.9.43):
Freedom Force

With prior versions of Wine, this game had a garbage rating. Multiplayer still doesn't work, but all of the single-player goodness does! :)

That cave story game is cute. Quite nicely done with its NES/MSDOS style. Runs perfect in Wine.

It feels really dated. Is it? Its made to look old on purpose Im guessing, since its a win32 program.

It's not that old. Think it's mostly done on purpose. (I like the old look)

It looks like VGA palletted or something, but runs on a system with hardware accelerated true color 3D.

Anyway....what games to I play with wine? Well....usually I play hide the sausage with a girl. The wine is for the girl. Hate the stuff.

Command & conquer:TW plays fine slightly slower than windows but not enough to worry about. (Mind you I've cranked the res to 1680x1050 with everything maxed out except for shadows.)

Still very very playable.

How did that work out for you??

The only reason I still keep XP on my box is to play COH and I want Windows gone if I can. Every trace of it. I'm willing to pay bucks for Cedega -- how much is it btw? -- and I have 1 GB of RAM and a nVidia GeForce 6600 card.

Guild Wars. It's way too buggy though. I'll crash randomly (I think it's because of my video card).

Cedega is $5 a month, three month minimum. I think they do offer some kind of discount if pre-pay a year in advance.

Anyone tried City of Heroes (COH) in the new Wine 0.9.46? Any changes?

I'm gonna do a clean install of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and run COH in either Wine or Cedega. Whatever works. Preferably for free. COH rocks my pants off!

what did you do to make C&C3 work?
i get problems with shaders on my setup...
I added all the direct3d and directsound they recommend at the wine appdb...
maybe it's ATi messing up the driver...again

I've currently got Unreal Tournament running great under wine, but did I see that there's a native linux version, have to look it up! Other games are less successful. Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 won't go anywhere with the game environment, The menu's are ok but that's kinda interesting for about 3 minutes. I have the same problem in crazy taxi so I perhaps need to do something with the graphics driver.

Diablo 2
Oblivion
GTA: Vice City

Used to play/have installed:
World of Warcraft
Star wars jedi academy

Also debating about installing:
Half-Life 2

Starcraft
Warcraft 3
Need for speed games.

I made the switch to linux over 2 years ago from windows. I use wine to play those games that I owned prior to my switch. Any new games that I purchase must run natively on linux in order to get my money (quake wars is my current most played game). Wine is sort of a work around to continue to play my older games.

do you really play ETQW with wine?
there is no downloadable version of ETQW for linux. all you do is download the installer, because the linux installer is not shipped with the dvd.
after downloading the installer, you still need the "windows" dvd of etqw to install the game in linux. it runs natively and very well, you do not need wine for etqw!

I've played a lot of Sim City 4 (works perfectly with the WINE betas that came out earlier this year or lat last year, haven't tried with 1.0 yet). I would currently be playing HL2 and a few mods if I could get that working. Fingers crossed on that.

I'm just amazed at the amount of games that are becoming supported by WINE.

GTA: San Andreas & Vice City
Just Cause
GTR 2
Halo - with a joystick to remove the mouse lag in-game
Half Life: Lost Coast along with Steam (obviously)
Simpsons: Hit & Run - I'm having an annoying problem with the audio though

I hope Test Drive Unlimited will work in the future. But I'm more than satisfied with what I have at the moment.

COD4 (Completed)
C&C3 (Completed)
C&C Kane's wrath (completed)
Samnmax season 1 (Completed)
Jack Keane (Just bought, plays fine)
Half life 2, deathmatch & episode 1 (barely played through any of them had them over a year bought on steam.)

I'm just trying worms 4 (Picked it up cheap, much prefer hedgewars)

all games work 100% albeit slightly slower than windows for C&C and COD4 and some graphics options have to be turned off. I used a patched version of wine with cursor patch and 3dmark patch needed for C&C and COD4 and a few windows dll's.

I play WoW for 30 seconds until the pc logs me out, then I log back in and play for another 30 seconds until it logs me out, and I do tweaks all day. I'm hitting the second month of trying. XD!!!

If you call 20fps on low with an x1800xt fine performance, then it's great?
