There is a automatix guy on the forum. They are not supported by Ubuntu and have been known to break the dpkg do not use automatix unless you want to spend a day of your life on the forum trying to fix it

I am sure that if you check and people were up front, you would find a number of Automatix users who have no problem with it. I being one.
kh
Edit: I use it to install Thunderbird. The rest of my installs are through regular Linux install methods.
Edit: No apology here.

There are several automatix 'guys' or 'girls' on the forum.

It probably is a good tool. But I would also strongly advice against using it.
My reasoning for this is:
- It keeps you dumb. You're way better off learning how to install the supplied functionality yourself. The knowledge will come in handy when you want to install something that is not offered by Automatix.

- Anything that wants to mess with my repositories list, I ban from my system. My repo's are my assurance that I only install programs that are supposed to work with my version. So I want to manage that myself.

- Upgrades become hell once you start using tools like that.

Don't get rid of it just because somebody said to. Automatix works just fine... And don't be sorry for something when you did absoutely nothing wrong.
Now, I don't use Automatix myself, but I used to and never had any problems.
This thread is kind of ridiculous. Just because you may have had a problem with something, don't go posting something obnoxious like "Warning !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" to try to scare people away from using something.

Automatix people are easy to spot they act like there trying to sell you something.
So if you feel like the kirby guys at your house there is probably a few automatix people on the forum :D

I am another one that has not had problems with automatix and I am sure lots of users mess up with synaptic.

Its just another tool

As far as support goes what support does anyone get here except from other users? I have not gotten any support from cannonical.

Ahahahahahha. No. What is your problem? Do you have a grudge?
I'm not trying to sell anything or even telling people in the slightest form to get automatix or anything. Do you have any idea what you're talking about?
I was just giving my two cents.
I don't even USE AUTOMATIX.

I've never once made a post to encourage anyone to use Automatix. If someone ask about it, i tell them about my successful experience with it while also warning that others have had some problems. Does that sound like a salesman? It sound like a useful input to a person who has asked for information.

You are the one that started this thread. It sounds like you are an agent that goes around the neighborhood knocking Automatix. BTW, back in the 60s, I used to sell Kirbys. Ain't that a hoot? :D

i agree with speaker219. this thread is ridiculous. just cos you had a problem doesnt mean everyone else will. i mean, when i tried to boot off the feisty liveCD it wouldnt boot, had to work around it. now imagine if i didnt bother to find a solution to MY problem, and i just went around saying "warning! dont use ubuntu!".

in other words, if you dont like automatix, dont use it. but dont be telling people what to use and what not to use. the whole beauty of linux is i get to choose how i setup my machine to my personal preference. (just outta interest sake, i dont use automatix, but if some people are happy with it, let them use it).

Nobody else here cares if your associated with automatix in any way (no offense) it seems only the poster has a grudge against people that use or tell people to use Automatix. I reccomend not reading this thread further.

I don't use Automatix. But I don't see how someone defending their position is "trying to sell you something," I think you would do the same if someone had a bad opinion of something you enjoy using. Automatix works for them, they're just sharing what they see as a good thing. Didn't work out that well for me (since I am a control freak that likes to know what he's installing), maybe not for others (the broken dpkg people), but it's worked for others. Why shouldn't they try to spread the word?

I say that if you are curious, by all means give it a try, but one nugget of wisdom from the GPL: The software is offered as is and with no warranty. Maybe Automatix isn't GPL-covered (I haven't bothered to and have no need to check), but nowhere in any of my Linux documentation is anything--from patch to package--guaranteed not to break my current distro.

Well. spelling Automatix correctly is important when you are searching for it on the Internet. I'm sure you found that out.

I am finished commenting on this post. I've got better things to do. Like try installing something new to try via Automatix. lol

Notice how it's the same people that keep posting responces. I'm simply taking the same stance that ubuntu does wich is automatix is unsuported and that it has been known to break the dpkg including mine. I just don't want anybody else to have to deal with it.

Actually, I just counted 9 different people that posted in this thread.

And what are you talking about?

I don't even know what you're talking about...

Also, have you seen the post count for this thread? The fact that you used the obnoxious title and that there was so many replies so quickly, people probably thought it was actually something worth Warning !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! about.

Not quite sure why some folks are so much against Automaix. I know it doesn't work for everyone, as some of its features may screw up their system then on the other hand work good on other systems.
Me I have accepted this risk, but I can say that it has always worked good for me. Being a DUMMY, sorry guys I find it very useful. OK I'm probably in the Guinness book of records for the times I've trashed my system! but so far not with Automaix :D

By the way thanks for helping me keep this on the front page.
I'm not forceing anyone to do anything I'm just warning them that it's unsuported and that it causes problems.Wich is why I named this thread warning. If people decide to use it after they read this then more power to them. When they come back asking how to fix there dpkg, I won't even tell them" I told you so" I will just do my best to help them fix it. since I had to fix my pc 2 time from automatix problems it will be very easy for me

Great way to think about it, Swoll. But I am curious about your friends that have had dpkg problems from it: Was it from an error code interrupting an install and hanging up dpkg, or was it incompatible versions in the repositories? I did get repository errors when I tried it, but got rid of them by finding and removing the erroneous repository (it had gone offline since the release). Then Automatix worked fine until a brownout killed the hard drive (can't blame Auto there)

What was it they encountered? Similar, or something completely different?

This has been debated many times on the forum so no need to start the same discussions over and over. Perform a search in the ubuntu Cafe then you will find many similar threads.

Here is the official ubuntuforums stance about installation scripts :

To the OP, if you have arguments that deserves this thread to be open again feel free to PM me directlty.
