As you all know I have posted some humorous stories in the past about my experiences with things that just did not work in Windows that worked in Linux with no problems. I had another experience like this today. I downloaded a .avi video and attempted to play it in windows. I use Windows Media Player, Real Player, and some free avi players that specialized in AVI playing. Windows would not show picture in any of them, only sound. So then I though, lets pop in the Linux Mint LiveCD and see what happends. Well I accessed my hardrive from the livecd and opened the avi file, amazingly it started righ up in totem movie player and worked right off, picture and sound and everything. The only thing Windows still has over Linux , for me anyway, is the gaming side of it. And Linux is fast catching up with their own open source games, some of which I have downloaded windows ports of. Anyway I do not mean this as windows bashing, just find some of these qwerks funny.

Funniest thing I ever saw in the Linux v Windows thing.

Lost a drive from my server running EXT3. Tried numerous linux "methods" to recover the data but it just was not readable under linux. It took a Windows program under XP to recover the data.

Well in my case i got it working in windows too, except it took a Linux Program which was ported to Windows to do it. So my guess is your windows program was originaly from linux or at least unix code too.

I've got some funny stories too. Told my friend about Rainbow Six Vegas and how hot it was. I went over to his house to install it on his Linux box. Oopps....can't do that. Oh well...then he asked that I also help him to install Quickbooks 2007. Ooopps....can't do that on Linux either. Hmmm....well then he asked about installing a HD DVD burner on his computer. Oh man...can't do that as well. Anyway...not to do any Linux bashing. Just a funny moment.

How is that funny? You completely disregarded the system requirements on the box. Looks like the joke's on you buddy.

The only difference here is that you don't expect those programs to work on Linux, but you do expect Windows to be able to play an AVI file.

Oh well, each system has its quirks. I just prefer Linux for other reasons.

Hmmm - What an odd thing to say. Are you actually of the opinion that software like this can`t simply be created completely in a Windows environment?

It would be pretty trivial to convert existing data recovery software to deal with ext3.

It's obvious that your friend didn't have the right codec. Same thing happens on Linux all the time. Why do you think so many people use Automatix? This is probably the codec they need.

What i find funny is your nitpicking about something which is your own fault.

if it's an avi file, it's most likely to be divx, instead of just using ur brain and downloading a codec to play it, u think windows is stupid.

I've only been using linux for a month now and am enjoying the switch so far I don't think people that prefer microsoft are stupid and if it works for you more power to you,but "you no whats funny" the fact that before I started using and enjoying linux software you never once seen me post on a linux forum. A lot of the reason that people switch to linux is because they are sick of microsofts software and philosophy so it's more than likely there will be a lot of people with a gripe aganst microsoft on a linux forum. So whats funny is if you don't share an interest in the linux community and there ideas why are you on a linux forum? Is your life really that boring?it sounds to me you windows fanboys have way to much time on your hands if you can spend it forum jumping looking for a flame war. It sounds like you need to get a girlfriend or a nightlife or something. If I were as bored and bitter as you guys I would have poped my head off along time ago. get a life, and accept the fact that not everybody is going to be on bills nuts like you are :D

Erm ok i didn't mean to start any arguments between Linux and Windows users. I myself use windows because I love gaming, but use linux for most everything else. They both have their ups and downs. Sorry if I offended anyone since it was not my intent. Since this is a linux forum for discussing windows I just wanted to post something I found funny.
