If you can run Eve-Online, can you tell us how please?

For Wine or Cedega.

I tried the demo about a year ago & it installed with Cedega & ran perfectly.

Having just downloaded & installed the current version I can not get it to work in Wine or Cedega.

I don't see the point of Eve-Online, you are literally paying for a character that can be beaten by every character who started paying before you. I guess the social interaction that Eve Online demands to prevent from being wiped off the face of the universe?

I just want to run the free 14 trial, I'll make my decision then. A year ago I found it boring.

Having installed MS TrueType fonts I could move closer to being able to log in, BUT all of the fields are white as is anything I type in.

This does make it thus far impossible to proceed. :(

These problems seem to have been bought about by a free update to Eve.

I like Tao too :KS

You'd think people would check the official Wine site for solutions to Wine issues. Guess I expect people to think more than they do. ;)

So kind of you to point it out Enverex! :D

I don't think of Wine like that because I really only use it for DVDShrink & SmartRipper, both are as easy as anything to install.

I have looked at forums elsewhere instead, quite a good Linux section on the Eve site, with switched on Ubuntu user's too, one of them being an Eve game developer it would seem.

I'll check out the Wine site if I have to, I'd prefer to use Cedega, because I payed too much for it! ;)

I'm still trying to play EVE, neither wine nor cedega wants to run it. :( But I'm still trying through the tips and guides I found on the subject :D

Last I checked, it ran perfectly under WINE, now's a good time to get in too because they just released a new expansion (Kali 2 iirc)

I've also heard rumours of them making a linux client soon though.

Not true. While it might be true in the first month or two, that's only if you try to fight them yourself. A handful of noobs in frigates can take down a character in a battleship that's been playing for years, if they have a strategy and some courage. Remember that most skill points after a certain point have incredibly diminished returns. Like, it might take a new player thirty minutes to train a skill that will make their guns 5% more accurate, but it would take an experienced player weeks or even months to get from 4 to 5.

EVE works very well with .9.40 wine, and VERY VERY WELL via cedega 6.02.

CCP (makers of EVE) have publicly indicated cross platform support, and are in process of making a "native" linux client as well as a native mac client.

(This will most likely be using transgaming's cider engine wrapper technology).

As for the comment regarding why play ? I'm a CEO in eve online, and it isn't ANYTHING like traditional MMO's with grind for the skills. It is time based learning, and even a 3 week old noob can be effective in fleet and small squad engagements, and an effective member of a corp from the start.

EVE is my other home.

I had to patch Wine 0.9.39, but the new version (0.9.40) works without it. There are some graphical glitches, but it's still playable. Have to use OSS, as ALSA gives very poor performance. Other than that, I'm a happy man :D

nice to see CCP making good on their promise. I might come back on a linux client just to show them there is a market (even if I don't particularly like EVE)
