::: UPDATE :::
I have considered on the move to the TeamUbuntu and will be folding for that team from here on out. Please use the link and the Team ID to get started.
The Team ID number is 45104.
Team Page: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=45104
I hope that everyone will take part in this and hope to see you all on the list!
Happy Folding!

I want to give a second announcement since the 10th of this month that we do have a Folding@Home Team. There are two people on this team and ACTIVE as we speak with scores being calculated and CPU's running to keep this going.
Please be sure to read the above post for more information.

ok...looked around and here it is :
To solve the protein folding problem, we need to break the microsecond barrier. Our group has developed multiple new ways to simulate protein folding which can break the microsecond barrier by dividing the work between multiple processors in a new way -- with a near linear speed up in the number of processors. Thus, with power of Folding@Home (over 100,000 processors), we can smash the microsecond barrier, simulating milliseconds of folding time and help unlock the mystery of how proteins fold. Thus helping finding a cure for MAD COW, Altzheimer's etc
.....describes the basis of our method as well as some mathematical justifications for how we can use tens to hundreds of thousands of PCs to speed folding simulations tens to hundreds of thousands of times
So this looks like the SETi screensaver model application where some of your system resources get used by that server to help them do the job. Well... if it is true and safe..I dont mind lending some O:) ....what so you guys think?
EDIT- if someone is using it....how heavy is it on the system? is it ok to be running it during regular use? or just while system idle?

It's fine to use and safe for your system. It uses 100% of your CPU usage but if your system is fast enough with a 512MB or higher memory card with atleast a Pentium or faster processor then you're good to go.
I am running it on a Celeron 2.40Ghz, 512MB and it's running perfectly smooth when running Adobe PhotoShop and other applications.
bored2k. check out http://folding.stanford.edu to find out more about the project.
EDIT: I also have this running on my Ubuntu partition as well when I boot into that, so it's always running no matter what :D

I use to have this on my WinXP computer. I processed like 300 data units too. But after my dad made me reinstall Windows XP and thus eracing all that (in his own words) "Stupid open source software that is screwing up the computer" Seti@Home isn't working and alot of our existing software we have sitting in CD cases in our CD holder isn't working.

"Stupid open source software that is screwing up the computer"
ignorance is bliss :)
i used to run SETI, but it found it annoying after a while, i never got a job done, theyd always end in errors, so i lost faith in distributed computing that day.

Have you tried to process F@H? It's working units are completed VERY quickly depending on your memory and processing speed. I am going to add another 512MB sometime this month if not next month and see how it brings the changes to it.

Do most distros have Seti@Home in their apt-get or yum respatories?
Because when I went to Seti's website to look for the Linux version of it (back when my parents let me duel boot with Fedora 2) it had litteraly like 200 different versions in the Linux section and I had no idea which one to use.

I've been contributing to Folding@Home at Fedora Core team for some time. I contributed with 47 Working Units, 15.887 points. Now, I decided to try Ubuntu (as of today) and so I changed my Team from Fedora to Ubuntu. The Folding@Home project is a kind of alibi for me to have my computer turned on all over the day. I believe it deserves our participation.

Sounds good to me, and thank you for joining, I myself have been slacking because of projects that I am working on and specific reasons why I am not running F@H on my box right now, but that will change in the next day or so.
If anyone else is up for joining, please do so or feel free :)

OK..
TeamUbuntu has 3 active users, 5 active cpus, and 34552 points.
UbuntuForums has 4 active users, 7 active cpus, and 20479 points.
I may jump ship and join UbuntuForums... we need to get at least one team further up the rankings.

I saw this post, did a search on folding stats for ubuntu and saw that team ubuntu was in the lead (and joined that one). We should all switch to the team that has the most points already allocated, which is team ubuntu. The number is 45104. Here's the link.
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=45104
So, all you team ubuntu forums folks, I think we should unify on team ubuntu. Thoughts?

So... should everybody move there? It's no good if only a few move/stay...
nbcthreat
December 8th, 2005, 03:40 PM
Yes. Everyone should move. We can't merge the points, unfortunately. But clearly we should all move to the team that's furthest ahead so we waste the fewest points. It would probably be a good idea to shut down the other one so that we avoid confusion and channel all new members onto the right team and not waste points. I went ahead and updated the wiki entry on folding as well.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FoldingAtHome
I also included this link to the hackaday blog article on competitive folding. Makes a big difference in how quickly you earn points.

Team Ubuntu has https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FoldingAtHomeTeamUbuntu as the team page... but there is nothing there. Is it possible to redirect to the new page you setup or have a copy at that location.. It's a shame we don't have any way of contacting the person who setup this team.

So, exactly do I move? just change the team number in client.cfg?
Will that update all other pages/move my score etc etc?
Also the wiki tells me to install it to /opt, right now I have it running from $HOME/fah
should I reinstall it? What happens with the current wu/my score/yada yada...

Just wait until you are done with your current work unit. Then delete the files from your home directory and reinstall following the wiki and put in the new team number.

I had this autostarting (session manager), but couldn't see its output/progress, so I killed it. Is there a way to have it autostart upon boot and display in a terminal window?
Also, I noted someone said that if you have XYZ specs on your computer, it should be fine to run. It is my understanding that the process/program has a nice nice value, meaning it uses unused processing power, and shouldn't interfere with anything you are doing -- that it gives control/processing time to just about anything else that asks for it. This would mean that it's ok to run on most any system (within reason). Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Someone please respond about the autostart thing, and I'll abandon the slashdot team :)

About autostart: Did you know that the output goes to FAHlog.txt and that there is a six-line info file unitinfo.txt? You can probably achieve what you want with those: e.g. if you want to see the log as it grows do a tail -f FAHlog.txt
System requirements: I have a 400MHz/128MB machine runnning folding@home, amaroK and samba. It looks like this setup just manages to calculate the working units in the allowed time limit, slower systems should probably use the no-time-limited-WUs-option.

Yes. All you need to do is change your team number and your WU points will go to that from that point forward. Unfortunately you can't transfer your completed points, which is why we need to centralize everyone on one team to maximize our efforts or "mass fires" as we say in the business.

Edit: Infact, perhaps we have hijacked this thread for long enough.. there is a TeamUbuntu specific thread here (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=102313)
By the way my AMD 3000+ 64 is running at 40.5c... so it seems fine ;)

Just to quote you on that chimera, Ubuntu does have a united family as one, now Ubuntu and Ubuntu forums is the same as Ubuntu in one whole, but Ubuntu Forums is NOT ran by "Ubuntu" in general.
As with that being said, it does serve it's purpose as a group of UbuntuForums Team for the FAH.
Thank You.
