How much bandwidth do you have at home? Mine is 320kb download/160K upload.

It just dawned on me that while I'm supposed to get 768K I rarely see more than 93k. Something wrong there. Maybe I need to go to a cable modem. I have Verizon DSL right now. Any thoughts I had my k's backwards 768k and 93K. I guess it is not so bad after all

20Mb(728Mb up) via sacm and a separate 1Mb connection Via Set Top Box.
Rarely see the full 20meg though but theres a lot of recent problems with my isp and their so-called "upgrades" and the stm(standard traffic management)
I only pay for 4Mb over all while they sort it out so i`m quite happy with that little arrangement.I usually get around 15-16Mb anyway which is more than i could ever need

I'm supposed to have: Download: 8192 kbps Upload: 512 kbps due to a recent free upgrade, however based on the speed tests I have been doing I rarely see more than about 450kbps download.

Your bandwidth is 768 kilobits per second, which means 96 kilobytes per second. I'm ignoring the bandwidth lost due to overhead.
So, this value you have, 93 KB, is fine for your connection. My bandwidth is 320Kbits, so my download rates are about 28-32 Kbytes per second.

Best way to check your speeds i believe is to download multipe files from a local mirror, preferably your isp`s.
Those speedtests can be a bit iffy.
Apparently downloading from newsgroups is even better but thats not somehting i`ve ever done myself...yet:p.
Read plenty complaints on my isp`s groups but not much else

256kbps down, 128kbps up DSL
Lousy reliability too, if the connection is saturated for more than a minute or so it just stops working and I have to reboot the modem.

Yes, it dawned on me about bits and bytes. Guess it was another senior moment. Unfortunately I am starting to have more of them

I've got Earthlink MuniWiFi. It was initially offered at 1Mbs up/down but about a month ago they started a two-tier service with 1Mbs up/down for a lower price and 3Mbs down, 1Mbs up as the top-of-the-line. Since I was already paying the top price I got the higher speeds. It seems to be pretty good, with 4Mbs downloads most of the time. I'm happy, since I had dialup before this...

Up until last week, I had 6mbit down and 3mbit up. I couldn't afford it any longer though. Now I just have 768kbit down and 384kbit up. Most things are fine this way, but I can't download shiny new linux ISOs in 15 minutes any longer. :(

I get 131 KB/s down with my Wildblue satellite connection. I can download a 700MB cd in about an hour. I have a 12,000 MB per month cap though .Beats the former dial up speed of 19KB/s. I live in the sticks, so no DSL for me.

I using a 56k dial-up modem at home, but I don't feel like I'm getting 56k! I'm lucky if I download anything better than about 3-5kbps though. That is a pain when I want to download something about 50MBs in size!

I didn't forget it, I didn't know it was offered... :) If the poll weren't limited to 10 options, I could have added more, like "so fast it can't be easily measured"... :)
More than 8mb, where are you guys from?
Here in Brazil most people use dial-up or low-speed ADSL (up to 512kb). The fastest one that I know is 8Mb.
But, as some people have posted, some have more than 8Mbps. I knew it was possible, but I didn't think that anyone would have it at home...that's a lot of bandwidth.
I have a dream. Someday, I will have a 600Kb connection. ;)

I`ve never known anything other than Mb`s when it comes to the internet.
I`m with Virgin Media in the uk(formerly NTL) When we first got the pc`s and internet last year we began with the basic 1Mb Set Top Box connection which was fine at the time.
I eventually realised that i could juggle my package about a bit and get the 4Mb Broadband via a cable modem with the same TV & Phone package for no extra cost really.
Then came a series of complete **** up`s regarding both our bill`s and services so as a result i was basically given a free upgrade to their 10Mb service.
And in the last few weeks VM`s 10Mb XL package has started to be upgraded to 20Mb for another £2 on our bills.I only pay for the 4Mb service though plus we still have the 1Mb Set Top Box connection as part of their bid to keep me from jumping ship a few months back.
I can download, burn and install Ubuntu in about 25 minutes on a good day:D

Ouch, that hurts...isn't there anything wrong with your connection? You should be reaching about 1MB/s...

Cable owns here in AZ! I saw a download from google the other day that actually registered at 1.1mb/sec and stayed there for the most of the download....
I downloaded the BackTrack ISO from sourceforge this morning and it was done in just under 10min...
They sell their residential connection as 4-6mbps down and 512kbps up but it often goes much faster if the originating site doesn't limit your bandwidth.

I think I have a faulty router... it slows right down when I try and download stuff.. I can't even login to it, and even the factory reset doesn't work!
