I'm tryiung to use the Ubuntu repositories to install Java but I keep getting the same errorL
'There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages. '
It latter says installation complete! But it isn't.
Help me please! :)

if not, how exactly did you try to install java? synaptic/commandline? which repositories did you use to install which version of java?

Actually I'm having trouble downloading anything. I'm getting the same error message when I try to download anything at all!

Solved the problem. You might not believe what it was. I hadn't ticked the licence agreement box on one of the licence agreement forms.
I don't know why that stopped me installing anything else but once I'd ran Adept Manager instead of installer, ran the update process and this time, checked the box, everything began working fine again. I'm bewildered how not ticking a little box can cause so much chaos! :D
