How do I boot my Intel Core Duo iMac from a LIVE CD and give Ubuntu a testdrive without totally installing it?

I've tried different versions of the CD with different combinations of holding down the "C" button and "command, option, shift, delete" at start up and I can't get it to boot off the CD.

Hold the "C" key down after you hear the startup "bong" to boot from CD. Hold the option key down during boot to select a drive (including Firewire) to boot from. The menu will select only bootable drives.

When I held down the option key after the bong I didn't see booting from the CD as an option. Which ISO do I need to download? Do I neeed ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso or ubuntu-7.04-desktop-amd64.iso.
I've been trying to use the i386 one, is there any reason that maybe when I burned the CD I some how didn't make it bootable?

I'm not sure whether the CD is bootable, given your description of the problems. Can you confirm that your computer does offer CDs as boot options on other discs, such as th OS X installation DVD? If so, the disc is suspect. This could be because the iso itself was bad (I try to download via bittorrent as it keeps avoid corrupted files, in addition to giving the servers a break) or because the disc wasn't burned correctly. In OS X I always create discs using the application Burn, which you can grab from OpenSourceMac (http://www.opensourcemac.org). This program automatically verifies the integrity of the disc after burning. Give it a shot and try again.
