GIF creation package - whats the best package

Hi Im a newbie to GIFs

Ive got the basic idea of whats involved in an animated GIF but I am unsure about what packages I should use to create them. I would like to create some logo's that change with time. I have got the basics of Gimp but I dont think you can make animated stuff in gimp......I maybe wrong.

Any suggestions for a package that would be suited to a newbie to start GIF creation would be much appreciated.
