View Full Version : Still can't get themes to work :(

I'm trying to get themes installed but they never look like what they do on the screen shots when I install them.
For example I tried to install this theme (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Orbital+Pack?content=59920), downloaded the archive, and dragged it into the theme preference window. It gives me the message that it correctly installed, but when I apply it, its really different, theres not shadow on the frames, the tool bars different. This is just an example though it happens on most of the ones I download, I can only seem to get the ugly themes to work right :P
Is there anything else I should be doing when installing a theme, other than dragging it onto the window?

Do you experience the same problems if you install the themes by manually unpacking to ~/.themes/ ?

Winner, thanks a lot!!
I'll do that all the time from now on and not drag and drop.

Glad you got it working!
I've noticed that if I'm trying to install a theme pack containing multiple themes by dragging it to the window, only the first theme in the tarball gets installed sometimes. Manually unpacking to ~/.themes/ works for me every time (and they show up in that directory after installing via the drag-and-drop method).

The theme looks as slick as, except it still doesn't have the drop shadow under the windows? Is there another part of the system this is enabled from?
I've been flicking through preferences but can't seem to find anything. Any clues? :)

Not apart from that directory, sorry. You could always try a 'locate _relevant_search_term' to try and see if there could be other files taking part

I can't get themes to work in my fresh install of Hardy Heron. I tried the suggestion above (unpacking my theme tar.gz file to ~/.themes) but the theme never shows up in the "Themes" tab of System->Preferences->Appearance.
Interestingly, if I select customize, I can see the elements of my theme in the "controls" and "window border" panels, but not in the "colours" panel. This means I can partially apply the theme but I have no way of knowing what the colours were supposed to be, so I'm left guessing on that one.
Is there a fix/workaround for this? Why is the Appearance app failing to pick up the new theme?

I'm getting the same problem. I haven't figured it out yet. If anybody has any suggestions or solutions, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
