Hi all,
I am no graphics wizard but do like to do something as simple as point arrows (preferably with shadows) to show something (I do beta-testing) , make rectangles to highlight stuff & things like that. I tried both GIMP & Inkscape & while Inkscape has a rectangle tool http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Shapes-Rectangles.html I can't understand how to change values of the F & S shown

http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/images/TOOL_BARS/ToolBar_Rectangle.png

couldn't they make something like say Red, Green, White, Black, Blue absolute names people could write somewhere. There is possibility that there might have been but dunno where.

Secondly couldn't find a way to do arrows in either of them. I'm sure there is a way just couldn't find how. If somebody would either give me a step-by-step instruction as to howto achieve that would do that. The image in question

Now as the image shows there are already arrows & rectangles this was achieved with a windows program & it is/was a very simple affair for the common joe. Just use which kind of arrows you want (there is a selection of different arrows) and can extend the length, width , breadth of the arrow how I want it in a user-friendly manner. The same went for using transparent rectangles as well as transparent eclipses & circles.

PhilBull made https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Photos/CorrectColor as well as https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Photos/RetouchPhotos so if somebody can do something it would be nice. Cheers !

Hi

Why not use xfig or dia for adding arrows or any other objects you want ??

Start xfig
add your image into a layer (by clicking on the camera button on the left)
Add the arrows on top of it and export it to any format you want

I tried both xfig as well as dia but they seem to be too much for a newbie to handle. I spent almost 30 mins. in xfig before figuring out that you need to click picture expand the area which then shows empty in all the four corners & then browse for an image .png or .jpg & then it can be saved as an .fig file which I've attached. 1st step, but getting any kind of arrows is still beyond me.

But dia is still a big riddle. I can see Diagram > Layers which has only a background layer. I can go on adding layers but till I don't understand what these layers do & how to manipulate so it will be tough. Why they can't make simple tools. so this layers tools can be hidden (voluntarily by user) & he can do all kinds of modifications to the image & just have an better .jpg or .png out.
