I agree, I had to do an XP reinstall a little while back for a friend. Man, downloading and installing those service packs drove me absolutely INSANE. I seriously went to the bar, played some pool, had a few beers, came home and it was ABOUT to reboot! Oh well, guess that's why I always am thankful I have Ubuntu. Quick updates that don't take up GBs on my laptop ;)

I hear ya on that part. Drives me bonkers on it. And have the feeling to drive my head through a gypsum board wall at times for the updates and the reboots. Ubuntu and the other linux distros don't take as much for updates. Can we smack windows programmers with a wet noodle for supply the gigabytes of patches that they provider the wetware with. (When I mean wetware so everyone knows. Means the end user not us guys and gals here within the community here.)

I have corrected the thread title.
And the correct spelling is ... "Windows"

Actually looking back on it, thank you for that. We don't want to appear to be constantly insulting Windows or it's users.

i haven't had to do a vista install, but the interactiveness of the XP install is utterly maddening... why can you ask me a bunch of questions then install... why to i have to watch it for the entire 45min or whatever it takes?

the xp installer it's pretty weak, it's like ages behind those of modern linux distros (and comes in my mind just 3 examples: opensuse, fedora and ubuntu)

You get like "ZERO" configuration options with Windows. It drives me crazy. Linux lets you do anything and everything during an install which is what I love.

Despite the name calling, I have to agree, the Windows XP install process is an absolute pain!

Keep in mind the fact that that installer hasn't changed since 2001 ;)
I think you'll find that back in 2001 the 2.4 kernel was shiny and new, LILO was still the standard bootloader and Slackware was one of the easiest distros to use :KS

Yep I have to agree I personally hate Windows.
I hate the spyware, malware, virus infections, the proven Microsoft slowdown bug that slows the system to a crawl after a few months, product activation, vendor lock-in, resource hogging operating system.
With Ubuntu, its so different, I mean I can install this operating system on as many computers as I see fit, I have all the tools like office built-in, the operating system is free, and it just works. If I have the desire to improve any program or even the kernel itself I can and the source code is available. In fact I rather like that so I can build my own custom-built kernel for my laptop to enable things like Suspend2.
The other aspect of Linux that I like generally is the operating system is totally modular, for instance if I didn't like Gnome that much I could change it for CDE or KDE, and pick one of many Window Managers to handle my applications.
I also love the hackiness of Linux, the part where you can pull it all to pieces (like my copy of Xorg.conf) instead of diving into a single-point-of-failure registry. At least if you damage a configuration file in Linux it will not prevent the system from booting most of the time - damage the registry and Windows will not start - at all.
In short, Ubuntu is an operating system thats kinder to my PC because it doesn't thrash the CPU or memory as much, its blindingly efficient, and even though I have installed and removed a lot of software my machine is still 5 months on, crisp, clean and still working just as fast as the day I installed Linux.
I'm never going back to Windows - ever. Ubuntu on my laptop is here to stay.:D

I don't exactly hate, I just hate having to use it. I wish I had the choice at work to use an Ubuntu install on my PC, but then again, the main server is a Windows Server install, and it is slow as heck.
I wish my boss would put a Linux box up there and use a VM to run windows if he needs to and free up the resources for a little more speed on out network. We could use a faster LAN also.
Windows isn't all bad, but if it isn't configured correctly for a professional environment and isn't administered for performance and speed on a regular basis, it can get frustrating.
Yes Windows is buggy and susceptible to bad things like virus and trojan software, but if you need to use it to make your paycheck, it's better than writing 1000 invoices a day by hand.
