you need to add some repos to your /etc/apt/sources.list file it's in the universe repo follow this guide and it should help you get it lined out http://ubuntuguide.org/#extrarepositories hope this helps.

IF you download Blender from their homepage, all you need to do is unpack the file and it will run (no building neccessary). Easy. Check it out.

i'm pretty much a linux noob and i'm used to being pampered with windows installers/uninstallers. my fear is that i'll not know where to extract stuff and i won't know where to find everything when i want to get rid of stuff... ya know? apt is soooo nice. dom likey.

I completely understand that. Blender comes in a ".tar.gz" file which is essentially the equivalent of a ".zip" file. Double-click and Ubuntu will unzip it for you. Extract it in the "/usr/local" file, that's always a nice spot.
I'm not sure if you need to uninstall the Blender you've already installed. If you do, though, you can use Synaptic to uninstall it.
By the way, don't you LOOOOOOVE BLender? I sure do. Someday, maybe I'll actually know what I'm doing! :)

so if i ever want to uninstall, i can just delete that directory? well that seems simple enough.
and yes, i do freakin' love all that is blender. i'm really happy to see that there are several other ubuntu users who use blender as well. i will be very happy once i've achieved any sort of ability with it. it's just fantastic.
here's a link to a couple of the crappy things i've made.
