Hi,

A short rant then a question.

I couldn't believe they cut off everything for Breezy. I've been reading a lot of posts on this subject of people wondering what is wrong. Why cant us Breezy users download the apps we want? I can understand it not being supported anymore and not getting updates but jeeze, we can't download s**t now. The only reason I'm running an old version is because I just wanted to use this old laptop and no Ubuntu version later than Breezy will even install on it. I just bought a new HD for this thing, reinstalled Breezy. I've been downloading all the apps I want using Synaptic up until about 3 or 4 days ago. I couldn't get updates but at least I could get other stuff. I think this is a dirty trick to force us to upgrade. Now if I ever have to reinstall Breezy on this thing the only way to get these apps I install will be to do it all manually. Then there's the dependencies. I don't think so. Now if I want to keep using an Ubuntu laptop I have to get a new laptop. This thing works fine for what I use it for. I know this hardware is old but if it keeps going I may one day have to go with what seems to be the only other distro that works on it. Puppy Linux. Joy joy.

I have 6.06 LTS on my desktop and I'm getting ready to install 7.04. I love Ubuntu but it seems I'm screwed on this laptop if Breezy ever gets broke for any reason. Puppy will keep it going but it's not Ubuntu by any means and I don't really want to go that route. That's what happens I guess when you get spoiled on Ubuntu. This just rubs me the wrong way. I'm sorry and I'm not trying to offend any Ubuntu users or teams here but this seems like MS forcing us to upgrade. I mean so what if there's no new updates, we should at least be able to get the old updates and apps we want with Synaptic or aptitude or whatever. At least the apps. so someone like me who doesn't want to go through dependency hell doesn't have to just to keep some old hardware alive with an older version.

I was going to ask a question but what's the use.

Maybe you should try and get as many breezy users together and host your own set of the breezy packages. If you came together as a cohesive group and contacted Canonical, they may be able to help you out.

Thanks for the comeback. I would like to do that but I don't know about hosting something like that or if I even have the time. I would like to help out and see something done but not sure what I can do. At least I pretty much have the laptop set up the way I want it. Just in the nick of time too. There may be a couple other apps I want to install yet. There's some dependency problems but at least it doesn't look like too much. I was able to install one needed piece of software from the CD by adding it to Synaptic.

But now I'm thinking about cloning the laptop to my second drive on my desktop over my home network to restore if needed using a live CD. I have dabbled with the DD command a little. But then with my luck some other hardware will go south like the motherboard or something as soon as I get it done so I'm not sure it's worth messing with. It is 7 years old going on 8. I may still try it though. Sooner or later I'll have to get a new or newer laptop no matter what anyway. If Breezy becomes corrupted or something I guess I'll just find another distro for it like Puppy. That's one of the things Puppy is good for I guess. To keep old hardware going. At least it's Linux and I have that option.

Thanks again.
