from your link!
Sudo was first conceived and implemented by Bob Coggeshall and Cliff Spencer around 1980 at the Department of Computer Science at SUNY/Buffalo. It ran on a VAX-11/750 running 4.1BSD. An updated version, credited to Phil Betchel, Cliff Spencer, Gretchen Phillips, John LoVerso and Don Gworek, was posted to the net.sources newsgroup in December of 1985. 1985, huh? And when did this Microsoft patent happen? It was filed in 2000. Well gee, that doesn't make sense. How'd they get the patent? It certainly falls under the category of "obvious" if there's prior art such as sudo...

it seems microsoft have a plan to just patent everything, maybe in case they miss something, y'know, like 'night is dark', and 'day is light!' i don't think anyone has to worry about this, though i'm sure the ms fud mill will try to rewrite history:D

"Smoker" correctly noted that "sudo" is prior art that was done for the UC-Berkley derivative of UNIX, and it appeared about the same time on DEC PDP-11/70's as a UNIX command at Bell Labs in Naperville, Illinois (I was there).

Posts that include intentionally controversial statements, especially if they are erroneous, only serve to waste valuable time, storage space, network bandwidth, and efforts of those who contribute here as a way to help others.

Those who have worked with the patent office and patent attorneys are probably aware that you can apply for a patent on just about anything. Many patent applications are superfluous, some are attempts to intimidate others, some are attempts at piracy of intellectual property, and a very few are legitimately new invention. The sad fact is that the patent office sometimes makes a mistake and allows inappropriate patents to be registered, which ultimately requires litigation to resolve conflicts with prior art or previous patents.

It was Google, but now Microsoft is back at the top of my 'Most Evil Corporations In The World' list.

The is been postes before... i believe the patent has been nulled, as it was considered to be natural progresssion of technology; its not novel.

there has been some changes to patent laws in the US, keep silly things like this from being patented... its analogous with patenting the command prompt.

I know this is a stupid question but why dont we just patent everything good about Ubuntu (sudo apt etc.) and other distros so if microsoft wants to use it we just charge a humongous fee for them to use it and use the money to dev more versions of ubuntu?

I must agree with Johnny4north about if Microsoft used it energy in making Windows better instead of invoking their FUD tactics. This only shows that Linux is a major threat to Microsoft's survival . If Microsoft cared about improving their OS, they would stop their FUD campaign and actually start making Windows "better". I don't despise Microsoft, there are good people working there, but they are using their resources in the wrong areas. It's not that hard to make Windows "better". Then again, my definition of "better" may be different than what Microsoft's definition of "better" is.

Yes, that is a rather stupid question. ;) I suggest you do some reading on the Ubuntu philosophy, open source software and the GPL.
