If you can't figure things out that easy and you want a GUI to help you out I suggest Point2Play. It sets up all your games REALLY easy and will fix that font problem the moment you install it. I've been using it for about a year and its the best thing yet (GUI wise).
You can get it at www.TransGaming.com

you might try to install IE in wine (using wine tools), the lack of text is due to steam needing something to render html, but I do not know if it will allow steam to run properly. I have not gotten IE to install in wine in Ubuntu, but I have elsewhere.
I pay my $5 a month to Transgaming for cedega. Valve worked with them to get steam running smoothly using it.

Ya looks like your missing the fonts completely... Honestly I don't know how to fix that other than using P2P/Cedega. www.TransGaming.com just makes Steam so easy. And its worth the $5 a month...I'm going on a year now.

This error is due to the font Tahoma not being installed.
To fix this simply install the tahoma fonts via wine.
It can be downloaded here:
http://www.lernnetz-sh.de/html/schule/software/software/font/tahoma/tahoma.exe
then in console: $ wine tahoma.exe
This should let you see the text on steam.
