I was about to say how hard would it be to sling a few GPSes around the
globe... I'm not sure of what resources are available.

I like the idea of an ntp.ubuntulinux.org CNAME that we manage and can
point somewhere. time.nist.gov is the one I usually use. We won't have
that many users that they will scream during Warty.

NTP servers generally have an access policy; often it requests that you
notify them if you intend to do something like that.

time.nist.gov is a stratum-1 server that specifically requests that its use
be limited to stratum-2 servers except by arrangement with the admin.

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/servers.html

US CO time.nist.gov (192.43.244.18)
Location: National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado
Geographic Coordinates: 39:58:43.44N 254:43:32.5E +1840m (WGS 84)
Synchronization: ACTS dial-up with NTP backup, DEC Alpha UNIX Service Area:
NSFnet, WESTnet
Access Policy: open to stratum-2 servers and others by arrangement
Contact: Judah Levine (jlevine@boulder.nist.gov), (303) 492-7785

We could run a stratum-2 server of our own for Ubuntu users, but the
admins have enough to do already.

Perhaps you could add a CNAME for:

ntppool.ubuntulinux.org

then this can be safely repointed if anything breaks. ...there's always:

time.windows.com

which some kind Redmond-based company provides as a public service. (Not
round-robin though but probably fairly reliable-ish).

Personally I use `ntp{0,1}.linx.net' for strata-0 updates and
`ntp2{a,b,c}.mcc.ac.uk' for general use; both GB-centric.
