View Full Version : Why is Mepis so outdated?

I was looking for alternatives to Ubuntu, and settled on Mint. I never tried Mepis because Distrowatch always showed it having outdated apps. Why do they stay so far behind? How often do they have new releases?

Not every Linux distribution feels a 6 month development cycle is good. Sometimes its better to fix what you have instead of keep trying to put out new buggy versions.

I was listening to an interview with the Mephis Developer and he remarked that there is one good linux kernel every year and he takes the best one and puts it into Mephis.

mepis is based on dapper packages, if i'm not mistaken.

and dapper is the most stable by far as an ubuntu version.

i'd say mepis made a good choice.

Well, that makes sense. I have gotten used to looking for the most up to date distros. I'm still running XP which is 10+ years old? That's kind of funny now that I think about it.

XP is not quite 6 years old.

10+ years old?? Wow! Basic Maths...Xp was released in Oct 25 2001..which makes it approx 6 years old (2007 - 2001 = 6).

well warren and the others do develop newer packages when ready.
The thing is that Mepis focuses on stability, but at the sacrifice of not having newer apps.

I have Mepis, I love it, but I like the updates form Ubuntu also and imo its more slicker to use. But I will never ditch my Mepis CD I have faith that its gonna be a force to be reconed with imo.

Since it is based on Ubuntu, what are the differences?

I think they add some additional hardware detection, it's based on KDE, it has restricted codec as well if im not mistaken and also has its own installer.

Warren and the team also add a bit more polish to KDE than kubuntu has, and it uses root rather than sudo.

Also, the installer and some other mepis developed applications are not GPL-ed, there "IP of mepis"

Its not really IP, warren has made no claims that some of the apps Mepis uses is 100% his own.
In fact from what I heard Warren helped a bit on the installer ubuntu uses now

Mepis has the best hardware detection system in comparison. For some reason, everytime I install it on any hardware or PC, it simply works and runs fine. It is more adapatable to different PCs, but not as beautiful at first in its appearance.

Mepis is stability first, and ease of working.
