How do I disable auto shutdown on a laptop if its hooked up to an ac-outlet and I would like it to stay on?

I tried viewing applications->settings, etc, all I could think of was disabling the scheduler service.

Is there a more direct way to do this? I am running xubuntu latest version.

Auto shutdown or sleep? I think that you are referring to the Power Management section of the Preferences. You should be able to set the durations of waketime, both for AC and battery, there.
