I decided to play with the Xubuntu desktop environment, but on launching Beryl there were a couple of odd things.

The top XFCE panel went transparent. Is there any way to make it solid like the lower panel?

The top of the application window disappears. On right-clicking the Beryl icon in the system tray, the default window decorator didn't bring up a choice... Is that why the top of my application window disappeared?

Can anyone enlighten me?

It's an Intel 915GM IGP for a Dell XPS m140.

Funny thing is... In Ubuntu Feisty, Fedora 7 KDE LiveCD, and Linux Mint run Beryl on the machine without a hitch.
