I just got my E520, it comes with Ubuntu as the OS. I tried Ubuntu and didn't like it, so I want to install WinXP. I can't seem to get rid of Ubuntu. I did a bunch of things, but we can skip that. I pulled the hard drive that came with the computer and put in a fresh hard drive. This new hard drive was formatted from a working machine and I installed Winxp on it.

So I install this new hard drive into my Dell fully expecting Windows to load. But no, an Ubuntu screen pops up and gives me a list of choices. Ubuntu was never installed on this hard drive, how is it that it still comes up? Is it in the bios? I didn't see any mention of Ubuntu in the bios. Please, help me rid my new Dell of Ubuntu!

ouch, it hurts to hear that you don't like ubuntu...butttt....

I'd imagine it's booting into dell's /boot partition?? isn't that what they have...

but no matter

Go into your bios when the computer loads (i.e. Press the shortcut for "Setup" or "Bios" maybe one of the F keys or Del.)

Make sure that it's booting from cd-rom first

And as a side note, alot of computers now have a device chooser as a boot option so look for that option..maybe Boot Menu?

that scenario sounds fishy.

As was already said, just put in your WinXP CD and install it.

I don't think that the Ubuntu Dells are any different internally than their Windows running counterparts. The only difference is really in the hard drive itself. So if you are saying that you completely removed the hard drive and put a new one in, to my knowledge there is NO WAY at all that unless you have the ubuntu CD in the drive that you can get a ubuntu screen from the computer unless Dell did something funky with the BIOS to make it look like the ubuntu boot screen regardless of your OS, but I do not see why they would bother.

Ooops, my bad. I have 2 drives and forgot that I left the Ubuntu cd in the other drive. Still having problems getting winxp to work, but that doesn't belong here.

then you need to go into bios and change the boot order of the harddrives..or you can tap f8(i think) during the boot proccess and it will give you a screen with an option of which harddrive to boot from.

but i still cant understand why people say they cant uninstall,it is one of the easiest functions to do on a computer.?
