First off, wine isn't cedega, wine-x would be cedega. You would better benefit off of wine-x/cedega rather then default wine. For one main reason, wine-x has direct x support. :-). www.transgaming.com and purchase cedega or...download and compile the CVS. There are plenty of how-to's on the forum use the search feature.

Other than being slow (Which, well, is a trademark of Steam as far as I'm concerned) I've had no trouble with it using Cedega.
Haven't been able to play any games, but I can still use Steam! :p

Wine (CVS) supports DirectX... hell it supports DX9 while Cedega only supports DX81.
Back on topic, however, I'm running HL2 flawlessly via Steam using Cedega...
Steam should be in:
cd ~/.wine/fake_windows/Program\ Files/Valve/Steam
