Hey all, newbie here.

I just installed Ubuntu today. I used to run Fedora but I got bored of it and am now using Ubuntu :)

Anyway...

I Installed Steam today using wine with no problems and I have full 3D acceleration but my frame rate sucks....

I get like... 30-40 fps max running 1.6 on 1024x768 32-bit color

My specs are
CPU: P4 3,0Ghz
Memory: 1024mb DDR 400
Vid card: ATI Radeon X800XL 256MB DDR3 256-bit
80GB HDD ATA

Also when I run the game my hard drive goes into overdrive and my computer sounds like a woodpecker on caffeine...

I run steam with WINEDEBUG=fixme-all

Don't know what to do
Help ;)

Thats actually decent FPS. I have x800gto and i get about 35fps and 20fps-25fps in source. Whats your fps when using FC?

I never really got cs running in an acceptable manner using FC, trouble with 3D acceleration and the like. But when it ran I got around 20-30fps.

I'm absolutely certain than I'm running the game in OpenGL so I don't think enforcing it using a switch will help much, besides if I understand you correctly you're talking about Counter-strike source.

I've been thinking about getting Cadega, would that boost my frame rate?

CS 1.6 on Cedega is slower than on Wine. It sucks because with Wine it has good FPS, but crashes my whole laptop, and Cedega has bad FPS, but never crashes my laptop :(

Well that certainly sucks... Here I was hoping I'd be able to play games through linux, looks like I'll have to dual boot...
