Why... simply why? I have yet to see which patents are broke and am wondering why companies are falling to this.

The only ones who are making this about patents are the press, because of the Novell thing. These companies, Novell and Xandros, are really, seriously, businesses and this is a business practice. I don't know if Xandros truly anything approaching a major player as a desktop/server/enterprise distribution as I've never seriously looked at them as anything important, so this may be a major boon business wise for Xandros.

It`s hard for those companies to resist the power of M$. I just hope that we have the strength to resist.

I just got a copy of Xandros in a magazine a few days ago. I'm certainly not going to try it out now.

You do not have to worry about canonical ever doing anything like this - Canonical have no legal obligation to the US, as they are an EU distribution, and software patents are not enforceable here, or are they recognised.

From the Novell-Microsoft agreement (I suppose Xandros one will be similar):
3.4 No Acknowledgement of Infringement. Nothing in this Agreement shall imply, or be construed as an admission or acknowledgement by a Party, that any Patents of the other Party are infringed, valid or enforceable.

Nobody is saying patents are being infringed.

Is the "Isle of Man" part of the EU?
Red Hat has also signed the Interop Vendor Alliance.

Well, MS achieved their goal. The Xandros user base is alienated. Lots of members that have "been there" have mostly moved to PCLinuxOS or elsewhere. Not many Gnome users there.
I started my serious Linux use with Xandros OCE v3.0 and had an older 1ghz Celeron PC with v4.0 installed on it. One of the easiest to install IMHO, but, as with all distros, that depends on your hardware.
From what I've read, their server product is pretty good, but looks like their Desktop will be DOA soon. After MS killed their predecessor Corel Linux, I would have thought they wouldn't make that mistake twice. Time will tell.

"The Isle of Man is not a part of the European Union, but has a limited relationship relating to the free movement of goods."
