I know this is a stupid question (I am new at using apt-get and SPM), but how do we add this to the repository list in synaptic package manager or into apt-get, I can click the link and see it is live, but it says:
The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.
I know I am messing up something in the address or the index location, but am not sure what it is.

If you want to use this mirror, add these lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://mirror.brianpuccio.net/ubuntu-backports-repository/ hoary-backports main universe multiverse restricted
deb http://mirror.brianpuccio.net/ubuntu-backports-repository/ hoary-extras main universe multiverse restricted

No problem, things may not be uber-fast the next few days as I'm shuffling data around to a new server with a larger harddrive, but things should still work 100%
Glad I could give back, once things are done, I should have an Ubuntu mirror as well complete (right now its only x86 binary only)

When I add the above repo address to my sources.list, it doesnt find it.
It'll be touched in the next couple of hours when it's reported.

Really? Seems fine for me... :). And the thousands of others using it each day. Somethings up there. Could you please do this command in shell:
host ubuntu-backports.mirrormax.net
You should get either 66.90.101.204 or 70.84.217.98. Currently it's setup for 66.90.101.204 to take the entire load because 70.84.217.98 was munching up it's bandwidth too fast.
66.90.101.204 is kind of slower but can use more overall bandwidth, 70.84.217.98 will back in the mix soon (that is super fast).
Gone over 100,000 unique users so far this month.. About 3 TB bandwidth used.
I only have stats on one server so have to kind of guess the other server (just double the server with the stats because it's 50/50 of the load across them).
Donations are welcome - http://mirrormax.net/. :p.

I was getting a lot of "connection refused" messages on the mirrormax site during "sudo apt-get update", which is why I switched my sources.list file to Brian's. I will try the mirrormax site again the next time I try an update.

According to ShaneAu, the Packages.bz2 file is missing from the main server. The server he can't fix. :(
Thanks for the info anyway, Shane. We appreciate it.

But I never said it was the cause of this, the .bz2 file has always been missing, but I think apt likes to check both .bz2 and .gz.
But yes, I can't do anything to fix the current problem. :(. Since it's happening on all (?) mirrors, it HAS to be a problem with the main server we all sync with.

I get:simon@infrared:~$ host ubuntu-backports.mirrormax.net
ubuntu-backports.mirrormax.net has address 70.84.217.98
Which, I guess, is why I get this kind of thing:

I don't think this repo exists anymore.
ok, i am finally saying what I have thought a thousand times....
Isn't there someplace that we could point to in order to get a decent listing of major repositories?
I've looked all over and I can't find squat except for a few mentions in forums of sites, and half of those report not working in the next post I find. I even keep seeing references to repositories that I do not have, and they way it's mentioned it sounds like the most basic thing.
Did I miss the memo?

P.S. Could somebody remove the sticky from this is these repositories don't work?
(sorry if I sound crabby in my posts, had a long day and i don't mean it. I'll get you a virtual beer if offended :) )
