I had the same problem with my Dell Dimension 4600 which has a 2,8 GHz Pentium 4. The onboard video was just not powerful enough. I solved the problem by buying an nVidia MX 5200-based video card. These cards are very inexpensive and many people like them because they are heatsink cooled, no cooling fans are on the card, zero noise. Install the card, turn the computer on and hold the key down to enter setup, change the bios to use the video card instead of the onboard video, boot up and use synaptic to install the nvidia-glx driver. The video will now play smoothly and you will be able to use all of those great 3D screensavers. You may be tempted to buy an ATI-based card, but nVidia has the reputation of being more compatible. I wanted to play it safe, so I got nVidia.
