View Full Version : Are there any MMOs out there for me?

I've been feeling kinda lost. Every list of linux MMOs i've checked turns out to be bust.

The closest i've found to a playable MMO for me is Regnum, and it apparently tries to start with a resolution higher than my monitor's for some reason, so it's unplayable. Not to mention the fact that the installer switched from english to spanish for no reason...

Are there any MMOs that are Arrow key/WASD controlled, free, and at least somewhat fun? I tried Planeshift, it was painful just to do the character creation, got in game and quit nearly instantly. Daimonin just looks boring as heck from the videos I've seen, and most of the other ones just look awful. I wouldn't mind running something in WINE, as long as it works, which as far as I can tell most of the free MMOs don't, since they require active X.

Honestly, when an FFXIr is considering WoW, it's kinda depressing =/

Hmmm, interesting. Im was going to try planeshift tonight, and I think i still will. If I were you, I would give planeshift some moret ime, looks nice! However, you could try Regnum, heard alot of good things about it...

here's the link: www.regnumonline.com.ar/eng_site/

Again, I have Regnum (and did get it working, it's fairly meh so far. Would be better if the playerbase spoke english), and I'm not giving planeshift more time. It's crap, anyone who can see a picture of the character creation process could tell you that, if you look up planeshift a lot of what you see is people telling you how crappy it is.

WoW is a really good MMO, and it works perfectly in Wine. I don't see the big thing people have against WoW (If someone wants to point these out don't bother, I won't reply to them, not interested in a flame war)
If you're actually concidering WoW I'd say go for it. It works well in Linux and it's a quality, good looking MMO. Just pick a good server and find a good guild so you're not stuck playing with morons :P

Perhaps if you don't like the current offerings of the open source community you should start building your own MMO?

It sounds like you're quite the expert if you can with a straight face say the combined efforts of many developers is crap.

You go to a car dealership. You decide to take the nicest car on the lot for a drive. You get it out on the road, it accelerates horribly, takes turns like a limo, and eats gas like a hummer. The seats are uncomfortable, the paint job is gaudy, and the car is in general overpriced. Do you build your own car? Obviously anyone who's able to tell a car is crap from driving it is able to build an entire automobile, according to what you're saying.

Thanks Nahvrook, you gave me a little confidence in it. I might give it a try, I probably won't, but i'll consider it.

The problem is that the "car" you are complaining about (being planeshift) is free. So your arguement is flawed.

Just because a car is free doesn't make it any better. The argument is that the car is practically unusable, especially for a vehicle that is supposed to be fun, and that being able to recognize that doesn't mean you're able to do it yourself.

alright. let's stop arguing about planeshift, he does have a right not to like a game ;)

some good MMOs that I've played that are native to linux

Vendetta online (space based twitch shooter game. 10 bucks a month)

Neverwinter Nights (and both expansions) (a d&d based game that costs $18, but is free afterwards. It works on a playerbuilt server system. the best server by far is probably the three towns (trustinginthefuture.com/3towns))

Yep, my point in this thread isn't to bash other MMOs, it's just to see if there are any ones out there I would like.

I tried to like EVE-Online, but I just need to see my character. I know EVE is adding it soon, but it won't be the same. I'll check out NWN, thanks for the suggestion.

something free with similar grafic level and a big world? =)

I think they're working on releasing a linux client sometime this summer, i've also heard talk about an OSX client. I wouldn't be surprised, since they're porting it to DX10 anyway. EVE Online does work flawlessly under WINE, at least it did for me. It's worth a shot if you haven't tried it, you can download it and give it a trial with a free 14 day pass,
don't even have to put in a credit card number or anything. It's definitely not an MMO for the NPC killers in MMOs, but if you're a capitalist who loves to make as much money as possible or a PVPr who likes to engage other players in combat, you might just like it.

Thanks for the info, sounds interesting, I'll check it out. So it works well in wine, no sound problems or anything?

Needed a bit of configuring to use ALSA or OSS or something, but after you get it setup it runs fine, better than it did on Windows personally.

I played eudemons, Turf Battles and Rappelz in windows and the petition is up to make them playable in linux.
For a great FREE mmo Both Turf Battles and Rappelz rock.
They also have another one that just came out and it's looking pretty good.
Both Rappelz and Turf Battles are as mature as Wow in many respects and they work on the shop system.
Instead of a monthly fee, they allow you to upgrade from an online shop, which actually makes them more money per player than WOW.
The graphics and character details are quite developed, not cartoonish like they are with some free mmo's.
BUT you never have to buy a thing if you don't want to and there are practically NO limitations.
Besides, each of the 2 games allows for the trading of items and online cash in-game between the ones who pay for goodies and the ones who don't so the community is thriving.

guild wars runs great with wine or cedega also just buy the game then play no monthly fees. found it to be better than other free mmos like silk road which is funn but can be a pain to log into at times. but with guild wars never seemed to be an issue it has execellent pve campaign along with a competive pvp play which is alot fun and both pvp and pve combat are fast paced comapared to most mmos out there.

i've played eternal lands it ok but found it kinda akward to control and lacking the depth and lore thats surrounds a good mmo rpg.

Blizzard has said that you will play World of Warcraft. Or else. They have Blood Elves with bad attitudes, I don't think they are bluffing. ;)

On my way there myself man, im gonna try out the new patch.
I dropped the game because of some player friction.
Take a look so far.
As you can see, I'm testing eudemons and Priston Tale.
I'll let you know how those turn out, after I get the workaround for gameguard.
LineageII is next on the list.

LineageII is next on the list. Priston Tale used to be in Beta a few years back, but you can still play for a month or so, but what I've heard about Lineage is that it's classified as abandonware nowadays.

PristonTale was out of beta 5 years ago and the new PristonTale2 is due to be open soon.
Lineage 1 may be abandonware but Lineage2 is not.

I have tried to run it before but have had problems with sometimes like the mouse and GW: Nightfall maybe I should go back and try to install it though Wine again.
