Are there any good single-player FPS games out there? Not really good enough to play multiplayer and tend to set single-player games to the easy mode.
Thanks.

if the reason you don't play MP's are because you not good so let me tell you a secret you not alone. 80% of players are noobs but the joy playing against human, swearing them and even clanning is fun. Just imagine where ppl above 20++ can have a joy to act like total kiddo with some 14 years old teens. with no relation to pedophilia.
it's fun...... i mean the MP gaming
as for single player, never seen a good one but this is single player game http://www.sauerbraten.org/
it's MP is pure crap and single player is some sort of total destruction, silly but funny to play. Just imho it's wasted game, with such nice old time graphics they could make better maps for single player or at least story.
Single cannot be good and even good MPs for Linux are made by huge companies as sort of commercial idea turned into present due to lack of funds for initial project like ET.

You can pick up Quake 3 for very cheap nowadays, and it works fine with Linux.
Then, there is nexuiz, AlienArena.
For multiplayer, try out Tremulous, Warsow, etc. and don't be bothered if you are a noob, I am one too.

There is single player for ActionCube, where you play against bots, but this is not half as fun as shooting/blowing up other people in MP.
If you start enjoying MP games I suggest you get Wolfenstien:Enemy Territory, which is great fun!

Penumbra: Overture is very nice an innovative FPP game. It's not a shooter, but it has first person view and realtime action. Very interesting adventure/horror/puzzle game. Inspired by work of H.P. Lovecraft.
Demo is free, full version $20 . The game is quite short but it's meant as part 1 of 3. It was originally meant as tech demo of new engine, but it was so successful that developers decided to give it a try and make a full game.
Full version can be downloaded, too !

Well, I second tremulous. IF you've ever played Starcraft, tremulous is like FPS Starcraft, no lie. You build defenses and stuff in First Person, then go to war, upkeep your base. Its sooo fun.

I tried installing Tremulous once from the repositories and it looked like it was in 640x480, with no way to increase the resolution. I couldn't find any Options or Configuration menu to bump up the details and res. I haven't looked at it since. How do you get to the configuration page, or is there one?

I just blogged about a newish one - The Castle - on Free Gamer (http://freegamer.blogspot.com/).
Perhaps OpenOutcast (http://www.openoutcast.org/) as well.

With 2 links to your blog in very active threads I don't think Blogger can handle it...I want to look at The Castle too...:)

Halflife 2 works under wine. It ain't free but shouldn't set you back that much and is a good game for honing your skills. Enemy Territory has also been suggested. Theres no single player, so you'll have to cut your teeth in the MP Arena. It is, however, a heck of a lot of fun. Play as Axis whenever you can (defending is a bit easier), grab an mg42 and cover an avenue of attack. Once you know where to position yourself you'll be mowing down those pesky allies in no time.

Be careful. Thats how it all starts...The next you know you'll be attacking Poland and annexing Austria...

World of Padman's next release should have a single player mode.
From what I've been hearing from the beginning it may kick quite the ***.
