I would rather go for the 1.6 rc2. It's been in development for quite some time now. From what i understand, it's more or less complete. It's just that they were waiting for xorg 7.2 to enter freebsd.
1.0 is rather old by now.

I'd really appreciate as thorough a review as is practicable for any of the BSD derivatives. I've been very curious about them, but have shied away due to concerns that I won't be able to get them up and running properly, whereas in Linux I know that, no matter the distro, I'll be able to get things started. After all, we all have work to do!

I cannot give you a review but I can say that you would be pleasantly suprised with BSD. Give PCBSD a try, you will probably like it and it is no harder to set up than Linux.

Do you know if it runs the 3945abg wireless yet?

Yes. PCBSD is based on FreeBSD and drivers for it exist (I'm using them right now :p).
Not 100% sure they will work on PCBSD, though, I don't know how much it derives from FBSD.

Did most of this overnight and this morning, I only average about 4 hours sleep a night so I have to utilize the extra time somehow.

Ok here are my results thus far:
1. DesktopBSD....simply would not work, wouldn't even get to the install process without freezing up.
2. Foresight worked like a dream and I am using it now. The main change upon install that I didn't like so much is it didn't give the prompt for graphics. Other then that Foresight is one the most rock solid distros available, especially if you like Gnome.
3. Scientific Linux went through the whole install process with the anaconda installer, the same installer used in rPath, Sabayon, Foresight and Oz. Unfortunately it would not boot after install.
4. FreeSBIE like DesktopBSD froze before the installation.
5. PC-BSD, this is the only BSD I have actually used in the past, I dual booted PC-BSD/Yoper then PC-BSD/Ubuntu.....the install worked like a dream...unfortunately upon reboot it froze before I could get to the desktop...
6. Again I didn't try the DragonFly BSD, (one of the only Live CD's on the list)....I will be sure and download the proper image next time....
Possible solution for future attempts, I will use the Knoppix Live DVD to partition my harddrive....just to start with a clean slate. I like to use the built in partitioner that comes with the Knoppix-installer.
back to try more distros...
of the 5 I tried only one worked: Foresight.

Why not try a "real" BSD like Free* or Open* ? Will maybe take more time to set up but if any of those ever hang on you, I'll eat my mouse :p

Ok I will try them both FreeBSD and OpenBSD
I have tried FreeBSD in the past unsuccessfully once, it ate my windows XP partition....not necessarily a bad thing.
I have been windows free since then, except for the two times I reinstalled windows, that latest about a day or two.
Anyway I am sure FreeBSD has progressed since then.
What is the latest FreeBSD version?

Woot! Distro test time -----------> http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1317049
By the way, who unstickied our distro-test thread ?
On Topic, I have tried a few BSD's in the past but seem to have a bit of bad luck with them, not sure why. The only time the installs seem to go ok is when they are on their own seperate harddrive. If you have a multi-distro setup like i have, back everything up before installing a BSD just to be on the safe side.
The ones I did manage to get up and running (FreeBSD and PcBSD) were impressive, fast as hell and unbreakable. Nothing could get me away from Debian now though.

Hey Richbarna, it's like old times here, when you and I tested the limits of Linux distros by putting them all to test and reporting on them....I am glad to see the "Other OS" of ubuntuforums.org has been preserved.
Again the only BSD I have ever been successful with was PC-BSD......blazing fast, so fast my eyeballs almost got off set, lol ;)

Yeah, I still do the distro tests on my forum, check them out when you can.

I had the same results, I can't remember exactly why I didn't keep either of them now, must have been a hardware or app issue. Anyways, all strictly Debian now, although I have kept a testing partition and still test a few distros here and there when I get the time.
Oz is coming down via torrent as we speak, thanks for the dual cd option, I just couldn't have downloaded a dvd, I always have something downloading and the bandwidth gets eaten.

lol. It seems that FreeBSD have a built-in spyware remover. Guess they added it in 7.x.
