Hey TheeMan, I got a small question.

Now if use the upgrade script to convert my UUE 1.4 to UUE 1.5, how big would the downloads be?

much less then downloading 1.5, I will tell you that. I have not wrote the 1.5 script yet so can not give you a straight forward answer. I will take the time and make the script to tell you that, coming from 1.4 cd is different then 1.4 DVD, 1.6 a whole new ball game I assure you 1,000 or so updates to taste gusty. Still will not do so off the rip, stability precedes cutting edge as a populous. I now that, I think about it why not build a 1.4 as you see it & close the entire 6 months, let the script handle all? One initial release big pounding initially let the script ride it all out...

Excuse me TheeMahn.

When I run the upgrade script, it asks me whether "I wish to grab the default packages for the above distro.", what does this mean and do I need to do that when I already have Gnome, KDE, Xfce and Enlightenment?

I will delete you account register as a nomal user, and I will promote you. Man how many bugs do I have to deal with here?

our installation does not seem to be up to date. Updates are available for your version of phpBB, please visit http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php to obtain the latest version.
The latest available version is phpBB 0.0.0. You are running phpBB 2.0.22.

is this something I will constantly deal with as well? Please re-register, I will have you set up who is new_user ;) ?

Lol, please forgive me no can do, re-registering get e-mail belongs to another, and so forth on name, not the exact words. I believe I set up my profile right and so forth so this can wait, you have a lot of irons in the fire to be bothered on this detail

You are a great man, thanks for holding down the fort ;) Sorry I can't always be around.

thankx for the kind words:) always glad to help where and when i can. i may have said it before but fantastic work on 1.5. it runs so much smoother on my pc than 1.4 gamers did (not that gamers ran bad at all 1.5 just appears smoother). and the addition of kde and enlightment just makes it all the better imo.

i have been wondering something the last few days though. i know its a little premature as gutsy isnt slated for final release until mid october. but

how would one go about updating to gutsy?

is it just a simple matter of editing the sources list?

also if i choose to upgrade would it basically leave me with uue 1.5 with a gutsy base as opposed to a fiesty base? i dont wanna go that route if it will just convert me to a vanila gutsy as i DONT wanna abandon my uue (id rather stay fiesty uue if thats the case).

what i mean by that leave the majority of my progs intact (the ones that arent standard in a ubuntu install). sorry if that one doesnt make much sense. tried to word it as best i could.

not remove enlightment or kde? not seriously mix up my kde and gnome apps?

i ask the guestion about kde as well as the mixup of kde and gnome apps because i use both kde and gnome from time to time. but ive tried the whole "apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" before from a standard ubuntu install and ended up having gnome apps listed in kde that wouldnt run ans visa versa. by the way im not sure how you insured that would happen with uue but i give you mad props for this. very well done. any answers from anyone would be greatly appreciated. although like i said earlier it is a little premature. cheers :)

First of all, you followed my "cutting edge software" FAQ, funny I know that isn't it. 2 upgrades will not go through? Strike it off as you don't care. I provided it as an option, not a necessity.
I think you mis-understood me, It was more than 2 upgrades, it was just that all but 2 of them were for KDE. It's fixed now though. I still can't thank you enough for taking the time to make this great distro.:)

Hi,

I hope this isn't the wrong place to post this...

I recently installed UU1.4 from the DVD. When it finished, I did a dist-upgrade to update everything, and then tried to run the "update" icon on the desktop... But the icons doesn;t do anything!

It seems to want a file called /usr/share/ultimate/gamers.sh, but this file is empty!!

Can anyone offer any help?

Like all good things it must come to an end, at least for 1 day:

Domain: downloadubuntusoftware.info
Server IP Address: 208.109.181.53
Dedicated Hosting IP:
Billing Date: 10/4/2007
Status: Setup
Disk Space: 2693.00 MB of 5000.00 MB (53.86%)
Bandwidth: 9578680.07 MB of 250000.00 MB (3831.47%)

The will charge me per gig if the acct. is active. I'll pay and re-open it, $1.49 per GB almost 10 TB, totals are worse:

17. Total data transferred 15.327 TB
18. Total data transferred in last 7 days 1.004 TB

Traffic is finally starting to calm down better then I have seen as of late I assure you. Just didn't want someone having a stroke I can't download ... ;)

My understanding Gusty is going to be released the 17th as final, my buddy was playing with it today, and thought he would drop some info on me ;) He was real happy with it minus the tons of updates constantly, well that is a part of cutting edge. I guess the restricted manager installed his vid card drivers (and properly) as I understand it, however defaulted to use compiz and all he got was a white screen of death, at least it wasn't blue ;)

I'm sure all will be worked out prior to release.

Excuse me TheeMahn.

When I run the upgrade script, it asks me whether "I wish to grab the default packages for the above distro.", what does this mean and do I need to do that when I already have Gnome, KDE, Xfce and Enlightenment?

The script was originally developed with 1.4 in mind, more specific 1.4 CD. The next update you as well as all the rest will be able to update to Gusty, or maintain feisty based (1.5 option becomes available for those that run 1.4). It will be a heavy undertaking believe that, when I upgraded from 1.5 to gusty it downloaded 1,100 updates, it indeed may be less of a burden on the end user to grab the 1.6 DVD and have it over with. I probably won't release the script until I have a 1.6 built (I use this to test the script).

If you select Gamers it will download & install a bunch of games (originally from 1.4 Gamers). I suggest custom so you get exactly what you want, unless you have a ton of space, won't slow it down like windows does. There is no such thing as bloatware here ;)

The upgrade script will handle it all for you, Transition by your choice to Gusty or you can remain with Feisty based. I have already upgraded to Gusty from 1.5, all from a script I wrote and will not publish it openly until it is "Final" & well tested. If you would like to be a beta tester before it gets centrally served please PM me, I will send you the "code", it will modify your sources list , and download a ton. But my repo does not get removed so yes still UUE ;)

Until I get the bugs worked out, be prepared to re-insall, if this is not something you can handle (or if your system is a production system) maybe best left alone. While testing I have installed as many as 5 times in 1 day. Find a bug fix it, re-install & test ;)

I totally understand if you don't want to help out, couldn't tell you how many times I have forgot to back-up my bookmarks, simple and slips my mind. ISO's in my home folder there a few GIG to the curb each time ;)

p.s. thee mahn: hows the forum coming along?

The forum has been more of a pain then anything, I'd rather be building a distro something, I believe I know how to do and quite well forum even though I set it up in 1 day is far from perfect. I know SQL, CSS, PHP, HTML, just the webworld and I do not look forward to going through 1000's and 1,000's of lines of code, the graphics would not take me long, functionality is priority #1.

Hello, didn't want to ban no one, guess I messed up somewhere, yikes. No problem on hanging out, have to administer pills every 3 hrs. Anyways I know Sunday's are your Family day don't ever change that. DVD came Monday and knew I was going to have a problem with KDE. When I did the the standard update it only updated about 9 no necessary restart. Went on with the sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. That is when it started to fix the KDE problem and start loading alot more updates, was busy at the time so I was not able to watch. After updates and restart Upgrade Icon worked. Lol," knowledge" there is no end you got me reading and studying Bash Scripting, what ever happened to just my graphics?

Learning a bit of bash got to love that you were a new user not long ago, kudos. You don't have to sweat the load over it, I personally stay away from dist-upgrade period and manually add upgrades. It will tell you what has been held back. I just tell it to install them. Minus Gusty of course ;)

You will have the ability to not only ban them but put them in "limbo" as well, I suggest limbo (if necessary) until you get the hang of things. Sundays will always remain the same here, I call it sad spend only one day a week with your old lady (used lightly), and problems are coming., sorry I still have your Icon, just have not had time, unless you want me to replace it on the server, I am certain that would not need to be tested.

I really instead of working on a forum need to be making a theme / graphic page I get asked all the time and have no answer, other then to post it. Now that I work have alot less time then I had not that I had alot before. Just 1 page right?

I am a hogg of the CPU and now know it ;) I expect it as it is extracting Gusty daily build, to fire up amarok... kick me a tune and erase a DVD while I wait for the extraction to finish ;) sata 2 raid and a 6000+ is around the corner for me ;) It will probably be maxed out as well :)

I would like to know what you all think of the theme? I may change the title bar but I really like the colors and ease of readability. Next to last screenshot is taken from the live cd. I was thinking about going back to the chrome "brighter" look. Please post opinions not too late to change yet. Lat shot is running a windows app, using a different title bar (border) same as used in 1.4 wanted to point out things change, look at firefox and fonts used for title bar and look at winamp.

I like the new back ground, and the menus look great. I would love to see the dragon from the previous post on this krinkle background instead of the orange. I do have a problem with 1.5. Some places there is a black text on a black background and some websites have drop down menus with white text on a white background. Is this something I can change, or is it part of the theme?

I like it also, believe each version should have it's own theme, if someone want's to change it they always have that option. May not be what you want to hear, like you don't have much to do ....yeah right..

Alot of talk about themes here allow me to share with you a new USplash I made... This will be used in 1.6, I spent all day re-writing the code for it until I archived perfection ;) It works perfectly at 640 X 480+ the 400 is fall back to ensure compatibility with all cards. Loads into startup manager current resolutions supported:

640 X 400 --> Untested
640 X 480
800 X 600
1024 X 768
1280 X 1024

Both graphical and text mode are supported (text mode is what made it take so long).

As always I present my source openly:

Now I am going to learn how to make GDM Login screens (hopefully with multi-user support) ;) Too big to attach, I host it on my server you can download it here (http://ubuntusoftware.info/themes/usplash-theme-ubuntu.so.tar.gz). Progress bar and text mode are not shown in screenshot below, does anyone know how to screenshot usplash? Full source including progress bars etc. can be downloaded here (http://ubuntusoftware.info/themes/usplash-Ultimate-sources.tar.gz). If you have any questions about the source or how to make your own usplash please post, I will be glad to explain. Funny didn't know c before yesterday, similar to php in alot of ways; VB was my language of choice before ;) Enjoy!!!

EDIT: GDM done in short order modification of another theme got to love GPL ;) Attached shot and theme. Supports up to 1280X1024.

Orientation tomorrow, making bearings, well it is a job keeps me out of jail for support ;) Just won't have the time to post each day here anymore sorry doesn't mean I can't make your 1.6 will be building a beta shortly made a grub screen for it usplash, gdm / wallpaper & theme; theme is called Ultimate - metal edition black chrome, downloading todays build of gusty to build it off of ;) Will run it until Gusty goes final, and will build all of you a copy.

Thank you back! If you are relatively new or not, some good information can be had here http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3370885&postcount=1041 and also at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty and one more here http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal

Used your wallpaper you sent me as GDM background and your UU symbol for grub ;) Keep up the good work, I can thanks to the code above build GDM's and Usplashes in less then a minute. It better took me all day to write it ;)

Many thanks go your way. If I knew how to make the upsplash, I would have it on top of your lap, or on top of your desk. Lol, play with words intended. But serious, whoever builds it does the loading bar have to be horizontal? See this idea

I would say probably yes, usplash takes x and y coordinates and grows to the x.
/* Progress bar position and size in pixels */
.progressbar_x = 212, /* 640/2-216/2 */
.progressbar_y = 321,

However a re-write of void t_draw_progressbar_640_400(struct usplash_theme *theme, int percentage) { section could be re-written to go the other way would have to be re-writen for each resolution alot of work.

Amazing look at the size of the DVD this is what I tossed on it:

results of installation, this is Gusty built, I did see 3 errors I have made nice to see so before release 2 is colors, the other a broken gimp package (will be fixed before you can download it, BTW the script fixed it for me ;) ). Gusty in general has fixed the partition manager love to see that. My upgrade script did not work see shot re-wrote it locally to temporarily remedy the situation. Otherwise smooth, still alot of work ahead of me.

Ok, loving the new UU, but why is the upgrade script taking so long? I turned it on before I went to bed last night, and it is still running nearly 8 hours later! Thats either a huge upgrade or a slow script. Any suggestions to speed it up?

Amazes me the ease of other languages when you know ASM better yet binary x o off 1 on in a computer why stack the accumulator at area 49152 (c000 hex) just to set the program in motion? In my opinion does not get better then ASM, however people like to think of c as the lowest form of language, I am certain it is converted to asm, by the compiler, asm does not have a compiler, however you make a mistake there lockup and reboot ;) Should I be making bearings?

I just ran a modified upgrade script here for gusty, only thing I modified is the check for feisty and it completed less then 30 min later, when I am done 0 min as far as downloading anything.

Perhaps it has hung do you have a stable connection to the net? If you lose your net it will scrap out your script. I will avoid that in the next release as far as the script. I have a high speed connection at least down, if I were to lose my connection while downloading packages, I would be hit in the mouth (but nothing I can't fix), perhaps as you have. It has never happened to me, does not mean I do not understand.

I have 0 intentions of updating the script until better then the 22nd of this month, questionable if I can even do it then, my repo is a maxed account and is looking to go down based on current amount of traffic it sees. Ccal can't do it all, isn't it enough to serve to 200 people at a time? His repo is dropped offline, not that I am complaining. Don't take this wrong most can not see what I see, or ccal for that matter, just to give an example.

Cancel it out and review my FAQ (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3370885&postcount=1041).

If it is not on there I will write 1 to address your issue.

Nothing of the sort. You can extend usplash in any way you like. Take a look at Fluxbuntu when it comes out.

Both will be there, early stages at this time, and yes both there from the rip. They have removed the dependencies from that package (I can purge and replace). I see a ton of improvements well beyond that. Haven't messed with the other intracities at least to this point. None of which matters until it goes final at least to you. Should I upload the beta? I will not have you or others complaining. I will remove all complaints prior to release ;) Would you like to host 1.6? 4TB used in short order? One thing you will get is it first... Shouldn't say that depends on size if it exceeds 2 GB will be ccal, a private acct, provided you are a mirror. If it is under 2 GB I will host it, I will try to make that happen, they have enough on their shoulders.

Edit: I just checked my PM's 3 days since doing so. Sorry don't have time. Seen yours great you feel that way same as me, help out the nix community, you are a good man.

Thanks brother, If I run across something I don't know and you have been here long enough to see how long before I learn? ;)

For those that don't know me... I wrote my first program on a commodore VIC-20 when I was 11, I am 35, what is that 24 years experience?

Would you like my opinion on languages?

Delphi as same as pascal declaration of variables sucks ***. Very similar language.

Visual Basic Language of choice, modules and now understand since the introduction of c, irregardless if I want to use a temp variable $Worthless, should I have to declare that? API - similarities seen in c now.

BASIC - Beginners All -purpose symbolic instruction code - This was a time to live, no globalization of variables.

Logo, a waste of time, same with fortran.

ASM - This is mack daddy.

Can anyone verify this? Running Gusty can't check it. Perhaps a Bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/109709) in invest (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/desktop-bugs/2007-March/083464.html)?

Thanks brother. Been running Gusty 1 day and tweaking it out already ;) Checking my Email probably a weeks worth to see / reply to ;) A day late and a dollar short:

This is to notify you that your hosting account has exceeded
its monthly bandwidth.

As of 10/1/2007, your hosting account has accumulated
9,359,351.65 MB of data transfer. This means that the allowed
250000 MB of monthly data transfer for downloadubuntusoftware.info
has been exceeded by 9,109,351.65 MB.

You will be charged monthly for any bandwidth you use that
is over your allotted amount.

If your bandwidth usage remains at its current level, you
should upgrade your hosting account as a permanent solution.

Finding alot has changed since Feisty, for example... The boot loader (grub) did not pick up XP I had to manually add it, I used to praise them for not shutting out windows, and windows shutting them out. Perhaps this will change prior to release.

The format of the sources list has changed for example 1 line instead of multiple:

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy main universe restricted multiverse

I look for this to cause problems, with many programs... including reconstructor. I will work around this, but it will lead to alot of headaches, not for me but others. I give kudos on boot times from the rip, it is faster then Feisty, I also like the alternative as far as xorg. I can go in and deliberately mess up my xorg, no more bluescreen a configuration tool comes up. I honestly look for this release to have growing pains, not that I don't like it. BTW I am building it again, maybe let the beta testers have a taste ;) I would call the one I am running at best alpha. Their server is being hammered, I only get ~ 60KPS from them, have 850, I'm sure with the solid amount of updates going on 233 since I last built it; I believe that was yesterday, insanity they are rushing to make it happen.

One of the major bugs as I viewed it the ubuntu-desktop metapackage has been fixed. ;) BTW I have a fix for firefox and darker themes it is 100% ;) The download server is back up BTW, I will reload it if I can't get ahold of ccal to fill it for me ;) If he does not have a problem with it Ill pay for 200GB for him to fill all distros minus those over 2 GB. Will take a load off him.

What happens if you exceed the 10 TB, as I already have on just 1 server? Do they shut you down? I had a Dreamhost server hosting a release prior, don't have time to even see if they remained up. I do see a ton of traffic, I could advertise for them if they took care of me, I get paid for advertising as it is, helps pay hosting costs, I could bring them tons of business... please don't view it as me selling out. I just want this ape off my back. ;) Irregardless I may move the download server there initially to test their service. Do they support files greater then 2 GB? My repo is going to exceed 2 TB this month as well, we will see how it pans out, provided they support greater then 2GB.

Even though the download server is back up it is hosted on a free acct. after it is filled I will upgrade it to a paid acct, or look in your direction. Do they have a monthly paid acct? I do not want to pay for a years service and find out they are crap.

I will inform you in case you didn't know your site will sore almost overnight & is a permanent address as far as PR. The fella that I linked to has a PR 3 or 4 and does squat but charge for you to have what I have made. Does make me sick, how he profits off something he had nothing to do with, I will strip him from my site it is free as in beer, Page rank does not bother me, I will take that from him as well ;) Won't worry about it until tomorrow.

I have exceeded the 16 in gusty but not w/o re-percussions. NTFS is a hogg to have write access to it, I almost never use, I could strip it and shave probably 2 secs, I have bigger fish to fry currently. I can always get it back from the configuration tool if I need it.

Speaking of which I am going to install a newly built 1.6 ;)

They really still after install need to fix gimp...

Boot time off the rip 0 tweaks... & a crash report for gimp still color problem #1 is gone #2 remains, I can't fix gimp. Corrupted is what it reports... I am certain a bug report has been filed and they are on it.

This I will inform of the 233 updates.. ubiquity was updated same with casper my friendly ghost ;) The live disk completed as it should have, they are indeed on the ball.

Try here http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1156371,00.asp also if you are running a router, turn off the power and turn it back on again.

Thanks for the link. I think I just about understood it. From reading it, it seems that I need Bridged mode if I want my VM network to see shared drives on the host PC, but bridged mode doesn't seem to work either - typing smb://myhostname still doesn't locate the host. Could anyone suggest anything else to try??
(I also tried turning the router on/off and that didn't help either)

The script was on that drive it would have been catastrophic if I had lost it... The script when Updated I am going to make it verify the filesize is greater then 0, that will never happen again. If filesize=0 inform the user he / she needs internet connection to run the script (and do not replace). I will be straight in telling you I have not even started working on the script, once Gusty goes final I will have a 1.6 on the net probably done in 1 day after gusty goes final this is the reason I have been building off beta; followed by the script update.

The script update will give you the option if for say you are running 1.4 to upgrade to 1.5 (I look for no problems here), optionally to 1.6 (this is a dist upgrade) feisty to gusty, It will be well tested but only with a fresh install hard to tell how much software others have added to their system. I hope this gives some understanding to what is involved as far as the script is concerned.

Awesomage 1.6 on the way! That's great news. I can't wait to see it Theemahn.

Thanks, running it and liking it ;) None of which means anything until Gusty goes final, I can see bugs in the OS being fixed daily. They are on the stick. I will be frank in telling people if you run Gusty do not use my tweaking page, I will have to expand it to address Gusty based distros, be it Gusty or UUE 1.6. I am uploading a beta for the beta testers, there goes 5 hours ;)

I typically see nothing short of a million hits a week, when does it become my job to fix your hardware, don't take that wrong. I have in the past tried to fix and successfully NTL done so, I am not here to do so.

I do have to draw a line. I could if I honestly wanted to do so fix your problem, who's next?

Please don't take this wrong I cater to a large crowd. I have opened that ball of wax in the past, now regret it. If I decide to do so 1 day after their final mine will drop, I have spent days ensuring that to be a fact.

I think you totally misunderstood my point here. I wasn't asking you to fix my hardware. I was just saying I hope that the new UBUNTU v7.10, which is what you use to make UBUNTU ULTIMATE with, will include more hardware drivers and I was just saying I was hoping mine was included in it that's all. I guess I should have reworded it better. I sometimes talk out loud too much. That seems to be the problem with me.

Hiya welcome to linux :p

erm, yea, since this distro (Ubuntu Ultimate) has tons of codecs/apps/cool gfx pre-installed it will be easier for a newcomer to get used to linux by using ultimate instead of the normal ubuntu.....

and no, you do not need to be technically inclined, just able to ask questions when you can't do something...

Hi everybody,

Can't upgrade UUE 1.4 ( non Gamers edition ) to UUE 1.5 via upgrade script ?
Terminal window opens then closes after a couple of seconds.
Re-install UUE 1.4 twice but still have the problem.
Did somebody have the same issue ?
I did also get rid of all personnaly unwanted applications, can it be related with the upgrade problem ?
Thanks in advance to all repliers.

I believe the 1.5 script is not written, hold on for a few, and if you read the previous posts the 1.6 is on it's way....soon.:)

If your bandwidth exceeds 5tb (or 10tb) they charge overages, and no :( apparently they do not support files greater than 2gb (i didn't know that....) and yeah they do have a monthly paid acct, but that'll cost you more than getting the 1 year acct and using the code i gave you....

greets

Does not mean I have not been busy but have been focusing all my attention on 1.6. I have built it / rebuilt is as I am now doing, I have uploaded 2 beta's, the newest one I uploaded last night is junk, the one before works almost perfectly other then the background color is still brown & not nearly the apps of 1.5, I downloaded todays daily build and am rebuilding it from scratch.

Yes, that is the idea... the upgrades run from the desktop script. Right now, that script - 1.4 to 1.5 may not be available, as 1.6 is just around the corner. Upgrades are done very easliy and data and settings remain. Apps get added, and I think a few KDE apps get removed. You can control a lot of what gets upgraded by choosing the CUSTOM option when upgrading.

Cowboy, pls correct me if I'm wrong.. havent been on in a few days..:)

My bad... I guess I should wake up completely before jumping on the support bandwagon!
That "upgrade" is a completely different animal, of course...
Might be interesting to find a way to back up settings and apply them to a new install of UUE from either Fiesty or any other ubuntu based install and have them get applied via a script or file after(or during) the new UUE install. Not sure if that is possible, a little out of my league at this point in time. I bet that would be a very popular feature?

As soon as anyone has a method that works, and lets us keep up with the upgrades, please put it in marquee lights! I recently installed UGE on a second computer for the kids and it ROCKS!

It is on Linux Tracker (http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=4638) & Tux Distro (http://www.tuxdistro.com/torrents-details.php?id=552), having the ability to direct download is much faster provided the user helps out and seeds.

Thought I'd toss down a few shots of 1.6 it was burning when I went to work posting from live disk ;) And having a beer 7:51 AM my evening ;) cowboy perhaps you will recognize the upgrade icon ;) I find it to be a bit slow a rebuild is in order, perfection is the goal right?

I have not made my decision on the toy Im gonna snag yet have considered NAS for the whole house, but am really leaning tword this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816133003). 230MB a sec sure sounds better over gigabit lan up to 5TB of space would not have to worry for a long time. Reading reviews lol:

Cons: Biggest surprise, other than fan failure including controller board, was XP 2tb limit; had to upgrade 1 workstation to x64 to get larger RAID. NewEgg should inform potential buyers of 32bit limitations.

Don't have those limitations in the *nix world, I think it is in petabytes (1000 TB) <---EDIT: I was wrong (exabytes are a 1000 petabytes) From the WIKI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XFS):

XFS is a 64-bit journaling file system with guaranteed file system consistency. It supports a maximum file system size of 8 exabytes, though this is subject to block limits imposed by the host operating system. On 32-bit Linux systems, this limits the file and file system sizes to 16 terabytes.</Edit>

Features: RAID 0, 1, 0+1 and 5 to protect data and ensure accessibility; Self-healing storage with auto-rebuild and hot spare functions Over 10 times faster average NAS system; Supports High Definition video stream (RAID0 mode); Sustained data transfer throughput up to 230 Mbytes/sec Supports five SATA/SATA II hard drives (not included); Combined capacity,

Probably will start off with 5 X 320 Sata II's since I already have 2, 1 reserved for parity (raid 0+1) ~ 1.5TB total 250 Internal and never have to worry about losing my data, did I mention 230MB a sec ;) All this over almost losing what I use to build you fellas distros, probably cost me a grand before I am done, thank god I got a job right & 2 other sources of income?

I have written a how I did it posted on my F.A.Q. (http://ubuntusoftware.info/faq.html#distro)

How do you write chuckling in abbreviated text? Wish I can have a brew at anytime, lol. All kidding aside hope everything is well with you. Things going good here, mostly easy questions, kind of hard to mess up UU. jfg69 pretty well on top of things as well as PharaohSD. And"yikes" the above post appears.

He is lucky I happened to be here ;) You have been doing well handling things I have seen zero errors, from the 3 of you. Great work fellas perhaps you should hook up PharaohSD with a mod position on the forum, he has done well here. PM him and see if he would like the position. Thanks again for all your effort. I wrote that page on making your own distro a long long time ago, still gives me chills, I love to help people. Let me know if he is intrested pm me his username pass and email address and I will add his acct with moderator rights.

Not directed to you brother, but I feel you:

My posts here have been viewed close to 150,000 times... This thread almost 100,000 times... One thing I do not want to do is screw up, if it takes me longer to build 1.6 or the script so be it, and I am sorry for those in a hurry, I would rather it be right then rushed, please forgive me.

I have missed all of you, unfortunately other things in my life suck up a ton of my time. I will be here Saturday morning (hopefully most the day) to help out,

The one above was for a live CD but this looks good for backups also..http://www.ubuntugeek.com/backup-and-restore-your-ubuntu-system-using-sbackup.html
Take me out and shoot me, lol, the feature is already installed on UU, good tutorial on how to use it

Ha! opening up TOO many possibilities, My uue on a USB stick?, now THATS ULTIMATE!
Gonna try the SimpleBackup and see what happens on a different install of UUE on another machine this weekend. This could be the answer to the Fiesty/UUE crossover...
I will install Fiesty, backup settings and then install UUE and try to restore those settings from FF to UUE. Assuming the same directory structure, all should go well.. in theory anyway.

had some spare time today, so decided to make some userbars for UUE (no app / os / anything is complete without having some userbars dedicated for it these days)

all made by me

p.s. Theeman if ya give me the UU logo (the gold one) i could incorporate 'em in the userbars......* i could have rendered them myself but a) i'm lazy b) need permission first.

P.s.s lol, did all this only to realize that the forums don't allow the use of [img] lol! meh, can still use them on other forums :o

Hey. I am having issues with my Windows machine randomly freezing so I have to reboot about every 10 minutes or maybe 20, but I can't figure out whats causing it. So, I want to go back to using UUE 1.5 as my main operating system, but I can't get the networking working. It will see the adapter, and the network, and connect to the network, but once its connected to the network, it can't access any web pages. I bring up the network properties, and it has no IP, Subnet, DNS, or Gateway. I *think* I have it set to automatically detect network settings, but for some reason it won't configure. Any suggestions?

What do you want to upload? do you mean burn to a cd?

I wanted to upload via bit torrent the 1.5 dvd I had to turn my computer off and wanted to reseed

I'm another one who has been using Feisty since it came out and just found out about UGE. I'd love to 'upgrade' from vanilla feisty to Ultimate Gamers Edition Feisty. As soon as anyone has a method that works, and lets us keep up with the upgrades, please put it in marquee lights! I recently installed UGE on a second computer for the kids and it ROCKS!

Statik

So, I put the UGE disc in my Feisty machine and it detects it as a version and ask me if I want to 'upgrade'. Does this do what I want it to do? Does it give me UGE stuff on feisty WITHOUT loosing any of my settings/data? Would Ultimate 1.5 be a better choice?

Hello, haven't used the Plain Feisty to much. As far as upgrading to UU from Feisty here is a post from TheeMahn himself on the transition here....http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3502924&postcount=1349
As far as backing up data there is some information here at this post here...http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3504540&postcount=1361
I would backup my data to a DVD and then install UU 1.5 thus insuring the UU 1.6 script update when it becomes available. Oh you should be able to backup your data to a USB stick provided it is large enough.;-)

Yes. Belkin router and Linksys adapter. Its a USB adapter but not a stick, its like an access point kinda. I dunno what its actually called. I have tried to disable roaming mode, but that didn't work, and I have my roomate doing a couple things on it now hoping they will work. Any advice yopu have would be gold.

I wanted to upload via bit torrent the 1.5 dvd I had to turn my computer off and wanted to reseed

aight,

if you are on windows and downloaded the torrent via utorrent read this http://www.utorrent.com/faq.php (altough you can use this for any other bittortent app)

if you are on linux and downloaded the torrent via azureus read this http://azureus.sourceforge.net/faq.php

I'll save you some time:

1) You need the .torrent file and the .iso file that you downloaded
2) if all you did was turn your computer off, it's as simple as turning the bittorent application that you used back on, and hitting "force start" (if you are on utorrent) or "start" and not limiting when the torrent stops seeding.

/// i could give you a more detailed explanation if you would tell me what bittorrent application you are using, and how familiar you are with bittorrent.....

3) if you see x amount of seeds and x amount of peers (means you are connected) and your upload speed is >5kb/s (or whatever) means that you are seeding....

p.s. please check that you are not capping your upload speed, and if you need to, please put it at the maximum that you can.

*note: the answer to this could be much harder if you are using an ISP that is throttling bittorrent (http://azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs), in which case the easiest route would be to enable encryption in the bittorent app, and the hardest being...well, hard. (but note, this is usually not the case)

Any ideas why that is or how I could fix my connection? Linksys USB adapter on my computr, belkin router. Any help would be appreciated.

So, nothing eh?

The question, again, is:

If my current FEISTY install has the / and /home directories on separate partitions, if I 'upgrade' using the Ultimate Ubuntu 1.5 DVD, will my settings stay? I know my data will, obviously, but I'm worried about evolution settings and the like.

Anyone?

This MAY work if you back up your data first and then re-apply the backed up settings to the new install.
I plan on trying this over the weekend, on a different partition. I will try to install Fiesty and then upgrade WITHOUT backing up and then try it WITH the backup and report back as to how well it works out.

If you feel so inclined, please do give it a try and post back your results so we can add this info to the FAQ.

Hey, anyone have suggestions for how to get my wireless working? I even tried ndiswrapper and that didn't work. It is reading my rausb0 as a wired connection instead of a wireless connection. Any ideas why that is or how I could fix my connection? Linksys USB adapter on my computr, belkin router. Any help would be appreciated.

I have no recollection of the posts that I waded thru to get my own "wiremess" working. I ended up adding a few lines to a file which referenced the wireless and it has worked ever since - ALTHOUGH... the wireless icon seems to have zero functionality with this particular method. If I run Kwifi mgr, it does show my signal/strength there.

I will see if I can locate that file and post the info here when I do.

@theeman, what forum software were you using?,

phpBB is pretty stable, and i like it a lot, although i use Invision Power Board (cough *missing licence* nulled cough). could send ya the source (or search for it online)

integramod (http://www.integramod.com/), it uses phpBB, it is not a problem with phpBB it is a module that it is loaded by integramod called Cback CrackerTracker, it appears to be decent at anti-hacking attempts, however it had bugs and required an update that would have taken me 40 minutes to do, I did not have the time to do at the time so I disabled it and it whacked my database and rendered the forum useless. I may just use phpBB and write my own modules. Looking into it right now.

Luckily I do have a backup trying to restore it now. The problem will still be there unfortunately. The pages are whacked. probably gonna scrap it all minus users and re-import them I have a backup of the SQL database. Scrapcheck... Listening to Limp Breakstuff ;)

@ theeman, how are you running the XFS filesystem on / ?

when i tried it, it said that grub will hang up when running on an xfs file system and use LILO instead, but it just goes back to the partitioning dialog, so i made / ext3 and made /home XFS......

what do i need to do to make / XFS ....(and load with grub)

most of your question can be answered. Personally, if you have Gamers 1.4 DVD I would do a fresh install thus assuring a smooth upgrade to 1,6...1.4 Gamers is excellent if you love games, I prefer the non-gamer variety since the little kid next door kept waxing my high scores, lol.

Well, I haven't seen anyone test the Feisty to UU1.5 yet, so, since I seem to have the weekend to myself, I think I may do a pare-down of my home directory, back it up, and try the 'upgrade'. If it works, I'll let you know, otherwise I'll try the restore from backup and let you know how that works as well.

The way it is going now will be of some time 300MB in nothing but updates (initial build) still untested. I have not added squat. Makes me think they were in a hurry to release it, not that it matters all will be worked out, only lengthens the outcome, results the same. I can not give you a solid date I am 1 Mahn when it comes to building & mod writing.

On a lighter note we may have a new programmer to help with the script Upgrade.

Wow I think my site is being crippled, updated the initial post and now can't get on my own site.

Loading, loading, loading.... Shot 1

refresh forum homepage... shot 2

All because registered users will have U.U.E. 1.6 before others. Look for a "few" new regged users in short order. That is if it can take the beating, I can't imagine that there were that many people browsing this thread / my forum / website enough to fold my server. Will look more at it tomorrow when stats are displayed.

Shot 3 traffic details as I see it via month... The millions always impress me ;) June was when I "tried" to move the server to a "unlimited account" Don't ever be fooled by unlimited at least here in the USA.

well the biggest difference is the dvd has more applications on it. 1.4 is available on both cd and dvd. also is a 1.4 gamers edition (dvd only) same as 1.4 dvd but it has a bunch of games already added. 1.5 is dvd only. same as 1.4 dvd but has extra desktop invironments added (kde enlightment, window maker in addition to gnome) 1.5 is also the last fiesty based ultimate. 1.6 should be coming soon though (same as 1.4 but gutsy based).

Great package. I was able to move from XP to Ubuntu with no problems other than having to go find a scanner and printer to complete my package. Curses Lexmark ;)

I have been trying to get onto your website and continuously get timed out with the error "The connection was reset".

I'm thinking there is a proxy problem on my end possibly as I can sometimes get on with setting my browser to automatic proxy settings instead of direct internet connection.

Either your site is getting hammered or my isp is blocking your site for some unknown reason ?

Thanks for all your hard work for those of us that are making the jump to Linux.

OK, I normally disconnect all other drives when doing a new install/distro upgrade. But, when I put UUE 1.5 on my wifes computer for her to try out, it inported her favorites and other stuff. So, I decided to leave everything connected when I did the new install of UUE 1.6 on my machine. After the install when I restart and get to the Grub menu to select a kernel or Windows OS, I get "Error 17: cannot mount drive" or another error for every option I choose in the grub menu. What can I do to fix this? I I have to disconnect all drives and reconnect one at a time to repair the MBR?

what is your current partition setup? what all is on your drive that has 1.6 on it? i had a similar problem once because i deleted the first partition (winxp ntfs) and replaced it as my main ext3. left 2nd partition (factory recovery fat32) then added swap at the end. i ended up having to wipe the whole drive and do linux ext3,winxp,swap (no factory recovery).

That drive had only UUE 1.5 and no partitions, just swap. I deleted both of those when installing 1.6. I can press F8 from the POST screen and boot from 2 of the other drives (XP64 & Ubuntu 7.04) but not not this drive or the main drive (XP & 64 bit UUE1.4)

You might try Wubi, its listed in Ubuntu Forum, here.. http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=234 ;)

Just came in to say I just installed UUE 1.6 and it was, hands down, the best Linux experience yet. Install was smooth as silk and everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) is working right out of the "box". I was stunned. That's never happened before...

Amazing! Awesome! Where do I send my check?? What's your favorite beer??? Bottles or cans??

Just thought i would let you know i downloaded Ubuntu Ultimate 1.6 from one of the mirrors and have installed it with a fresh install on my pc that did have UUE 1.4

WOW!!!

I thought UUE1.4 was silk... this is awesome!!!

I love UUE 1.6

Thanks so much.

Everything works out of the box, this is t-riffic

Thanks so much

i have just installed Ubuntu Ultimate 1.6 on my PC, took 20 minutes for a fresh install, format hdd and copy the data over.
i then installed thunderbird from the repos and installed my backup copy of thunderbird emails contacts and made a few changes to the apperance and installed a few little extra apps i like to use. without the interruptions, it would have been about 40 minutes tops.

that pc is the one im using right now. a pentium 4 3Ghz machine with one gig of ram and a few 40 gig hdds and dvd burner.nothing flash, but it does what i need.

next too me is my wifes pc. last night Xp Pro had a jiant spit. anyhow, it is a Pentium 4 2Ghz with 512 meg of ram and a few 80 gig hdd and dvd burner. again, nothing flash.

this morning i formatted the first hdd and reinstalled xp pro.
that took over 40 minutes on its own to install!!!
thats just the OS

now to go installing antivirus, portable apps , vlc media player... oh yeah, and lets not forget to install the correct drivers for the hardware....

yeah thats right , i forgot, my Ubuntu worked straight out of the box, only had to enable the driver my my Nvidia card. that was easy, ubuntu gave me a little check box and press ok, restart. done.

easy.

C'mon microsoft you have got some serious catching up to do!

Thanks so much to "TheeMahn" for this, love your work. keep it coming

Hi! I don't know if anybody here still reads this thread, I have an issue with Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 1.6. It's the following, I'm using the default Ubuntu ultimate theme, some programs that have white backgrounds (like Limewire for example) display white font!!! so I can't see anything!! but I don't want to change the awesome theme, also in the appearance section I don't see any option to change font color and most programs don't have an option for that either! another example is aMSN which displays everything in white fonts and it's almost impossible to read. Any way to fix this that anybody know and can help me please?????

Edit: O yeah, and also, in some programs in which I have to type something (again LImewire and aMSN examples given) what I type is also in white so I can't see what I'm typing...it tends to happen on some websites too regardless of browser I use!

I can't change mouse cursor with cursor selection (gcursor)

And nothing happens when i press + install theme or go to theme folder.

You need to go to the general options under the compiz control center and delete "Human" from the mouse scheme. After that you can go to customize under desktop themes and click on cursors. Click on the the theme you want, close the box, then restart X (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace)

Also, visit the Ultimate Edition forums, not many of us check this thread anymore. Ultimate Edition is the new name for Ubuntu Ultimate. Click on the link in my sig for more help and support.

If you could probably be more specific? what happens after you click "start or install ubuntu"? does it happen every time? and what version of Ultimate is it? because 1.7 just came out...

Try starting in safe graphics mode (2nd option) What components is your computer built from (motherboard, processor, memory, video card, etc)?

are you sure its 1.5? 1.5 was fiesty based (7.04). 1.6 started gutsy based (7.10). also you might want to register on our forum not many of us check this thread anymore.

http://www.forumubuntusoftware.info/

something you might try is before hitting enter on start or install. hit f6 first. then delete quiet and splash. now this will make alot of text scroll across the screen really fast so you might have to do it a few times. what we are looking for is anything that says error or failed. if you get anything like that please try to write down as much of the error as possible and make a new thread on our forum (link is above) with that and any other pertinate information.

I asked because I never tried anything before 1.6 because I was happy with SUSE...so I didn't know if there were known problems, but I do know about the small issues that sometimes happen to people with 1.6 during or before installation...you should get 1.7, I'm doing the same tomorrow when I get some blank DVDs

Trust me, 1.7 is a lot better. If you want KDE instead of Gnome there is a 1.7 KDE edition.

Yeah, that's called dual-booting which I'm doing right now. But I never installed Windows first, you should ask around what do you do when you install Windows first.

Well, haven't tried 1.7 yet but maybe you should post some of those errors...and if you want to replace Windows just go and install Ubuntu and tell it to use "the whole disc" or something similar and it will format the hard drive and install Ubuntu as the only OS on the PC

Please post you errors. And as mentioned earlier. You should really post you error messages on the UE Forums. UE may be based on Ubuntu, but it is different enough to cause it's own warnings.

Also of note. If the live CD booted for you and then showed a couple of errors, something like mysql-server, then it's no big deal. It fixes on full install.

That version hasn't been updated anymore, it's too old. You should get Ultimate Edition 1.7

You can get most of them games from Synaptic...although there's a few ones that are exclusive to Gamer's edition but you can get them on the internet...besides the versions that come with it are already outdated.

Ya I guess you are right. But it's still nice to have the games already configured properly and ready to be played, even if I don't play half of them. I will live :)
