pix file won't open

I need to modify a poster which is in a file with a .pix extension and can not open the file with any of the programs in Ubuntu 6.10. When I try to open it with GIMP only a small portion of the poster appears on the screen, imagine the [poster has an image of a person and only the hands show, that is what I am getting. Are there add ons for GIMP or some other program I can use for this file?

This may be a stupid question, but by any chance is the image being opened really large?

The remainder of the image may be there but out of the edge of the image view port.
Are there scrollbars on the side and bottom of the image window?
