I am testing linux distros and I don't really want to waste time writing/erasing CD-RWs. Is it possible to boot from an iso image for any linux distro? I want to install it onto the computer (not a VM) so I can customize it until I like it and put it onto the main hard drive.

I think it might be possible, as it's what the Wubi project does. But it would probably take more time to set up than it would to just burn CDs in the background. It's only 12 minutes to burn a CD-R reliably, and you can play games while it's burning.
