WHY, oh WHY is it not fully supported?!
yes, you can enable the option in xorg.conf, but that only gives you the function of holding down the button. WHY hasn't someone made a true equivelent to the Windows (XP only?) middle button scroll... with the thing that you can just let go of the mouse and it keep on scrolling? WHY? WHY? WHY?
OK, i'm done ranting. :-x

i'm not sure about what you mean...do you mean pressing middle mouse button and the little round thing would appear so you can scroll by moving your mouse?
thats what i thought was standard on all windowses/linuxes/Macses...

I followed a guide on these forums to get my intelimouse extra buttons working under ubuntu, and when I middle-click, I can scroll up and down pages just fine by moving my mouse around. I don't have to hold anything down at all. Maybe you should search around the forums.

Some apps support it such as Firefox, Opera and Konqueror. Mostly you have to enable something like 'autoscrolling'.
But it would be nice if more apps support it indeed.

You should be able to customize to your hearts delight. That said, I think most people who have used *nix for a long time would prefer that the default configuration to drop/paste selected text. After all windows that need scrolling have scroll bars, however not all windows have a copy/paste button. One either needs to hunt for it in the menu or use a keyboard sequence. Selecting text by holding the left button and then dropping it with the middle is much, much faster. Using the middle mouse button to scroll is only a little faster.

Well... not for me.
I'll rather have my middle button scroll in Firefox.
But that's probably just me.

Using the middle mouse button to scroll is only a little faster.
On the flipside, I scroll text on every single page I visit while, after 4 hours of usage, I can count the copy & paste operations I've made today on 1 hand.

You do know that pressing in the scroll wheel opens a link in a new tab?
IMO thats a lot more handy then the winblows thing.

Enabling autoscroll doesn't remove this functionality. I use both of them all the time.
Besides autoscroll is not a Windows invention. Who told you that?
Sorry if I'm harsh... I just don't like good features to be credited as M$ inventions.

Neither do I.I don't see that as a good feature.
