All,

YDL says they've got the issues worked out with sound and fan management on G5 boxes. Any rumors on ubuntu getting in on those solutions? I guess I'm trying to say, does YDL and ubuntu share code/information on refining power management, drivers, et cetera?

I'm running ubuntu 386 (Hoary) in VPC and loving it. I'd like to dual boot to native 64bit ubuntu but need to know my fans aren't going to shake my apartment 24x7.

I believe it depends on the G5. Mine from 2004 has great temperature management, I believe the new ones do not.

also, sound doesn't work on any G5 as of yet. It can come in in spurts, but no sustained sound is possible.

I just checked out the live cd. It's 32 bit. The reason why you have no fan issues is because fan issues exist in the 64bit versions of Linux, not the 32bit.

I'll install k/ubuntu when it goes 64bit.

edit// ...and I have every intention of installing it. Even the 32 bit was very nice. Back when I was an Intel hardware type, I was always disappointed by screen draws, et cetera. Kubuntu on PPC is lovely all around! //edit :)
