I installed this last week, after being extremely bored with how XP looked and functioned. I like it a lot, except for one huge bug: IE. All jokes aside, this is what I am use, and will continue to use on this particular computer. When I installed VTP6, the Styler skin installed a useless bar in IE, and (more importantly) IE hangs and doesn't respond at least twice a day. I have to right-click close or use Task Manager. It's really damn annoying, and I'm thinking about uninstalling the whole VTP if I can't get it to stop crashing.

Anyone else have this problem, and know a fix? I checked the jcwx(?) forums and no one had posted anything relevant.

How come you're even using IE? Ever heard of FF, Opera?

I think that's been out for years, unless it's a new version.

I tried it over a year ago; nothing special.

New versions every few months - there's a version 7 coming up within the next couple of months. I used it on and off for about a year and I liked it. I certainly didn't see all the resource 'hoggage' everyone keeps mentioning in the same breath as VTP, though.

However, to your problem. I assume that you're using VTP version 6. Are you able to just turn off the Styler bar in IE (right-click on the toolbars and uncheck Styler Toolbar)?

No. I had no idea of anything besides Microsoft until you told me.

IE is on this particular computer, end of discussion. FF is on everything else.

I can't uncheck the Styler Toolbar without losing my address entry field. I can switch skins, but can't remove it. I tried over-installing IE 7 again, but that did nothing.

There should be a Styler icon (black sphere with a yellow S on it) in the system tray. If you double-click on it, you should be able to go to a tab called Toolbar or something like that (should be the second tab). In there, uncheck the "Hide IE Menubar" option.

If that doesn't work, I have no idea what will.

I used it, I liked the look. I can only suggest to you for system performance and to fix that bug to uninstall everything and only install the windows's border, startmenu, and if you want the boot screen, login screen. First time I installed it it was a pain in my a$$ becuase the taskbar throbber and side bar ate up too many resources and the tool bar was pretty much useless in the computer browser. But I would suggest you get Firefox anyways it takes a bit but you can make it look and pretty much act like IE.

The window borders and start menu (as well as almost all other visual elements) are part of a visual style which you can readily change - I never noticed too big a performance dip with that on (512 meg of RAM when I used it), but I'm sure it'd help.

And as for the toolbar, it depends what skin you use - you can find heaps of Styler Toolbar skins (especially on deviantART) that are more functional than you'd ever need! :D

By the way, what do you mean by the taskbar throbber?

Here is another VTP question:

Is it true that installing VTP messes with the registry? I was reading up on this the other day and somewhere I found it mentioned that one must make a System Restore Point or something like that in case things go horribly wrong!

In your experience, is it a common experience for things to get messed up while installing VTP and when it is working? And finally, is this VTP really worth it? I know its free etc. but is it worth the hassle (if at all it is a hassle)?

Thanks,

Also, on this subject...anyone use Vista Inspirat BricoPack? One of the places it is available at is http://www.download.com/Vista-Transformation-Pack/3640-2086_4-10631174.html?pn=3&sb=0&v=0
